I see them on Amazon for $4.99. Is there a place that sells them cheaper and has reliable ones?

To my eyes, that almost looks like a cleaned up mechanism from an existing controller. But the comments make it sound as if it's a new component and they seem happy overall with it as a replacement.
The only ones I'm familiar with are pictured in this Ebay link. I've been pleased with the one I installed in a used controller and have heard others that had good things to say about them. We've had several threads about these over the past year or so.

I'd avoid using an N64 controller at all. Instead, invest in a Hori Mini pad from Japan. These controllers have a much much better analog stick that's arguably even better than the Gamecube's. The only thing that the Hori controllers dont do well is the placement of the dpad. For N64 games that need easy, regular access to the dpad but not the Analog, stick with the standard N64 controller.
They're expensive to import, but well worth it.

Better still, use a GameCube controller:

I fix things. You name it, I'll work on it. Want something modded? Recapped?
I'm in need of several of these to repair a bunch of worn out controllers I have sitting around. If anybody's aware of a wholesale source I'd be more than happy to provide them at cost to fellow DP members.
Has anyone tried these replacement sticks out and can vouch for their longevity? I mean several months worth of heavy use.
I purchased a couple of the Gamecube-style replacement sticks on eBay sometime around Christmas. My brother uses it constantly for Smash Bros, Golden Eye 007 and Perfect Dark without any complaint.
I got one recently from lukie games and it works really well and I'm happy with it, it is the gamecube look a like one. Don't know where there is a good deal wholesale though, maybe ebay.

Little update. Sorry for the double post.
I got two analog sticks from the Amazon seller I linked to in the first page. The pictures are misleading. They're the GameCube style ones. They work as advertised. I noticed that some games are more sensitive than others due to the game's programming (i.e. you only have to press the stick halfway to make Mario run full speed in Super Mario 64, while other games you have to press completely). The sticks themselves feel lighter than the original N64 ones. However, they still have good resistance and response.
