Just install it on a Windows 98 box and you're set. Otherwise, problems depending on your hardware (video) and in general compatibility wise for software may hinder progress. I never ran it in W7 but even in XP I ran into a real mess so very close to the end of the game forcing me to copy the save over to a 98 box to complete it.

You'll save yourself a lot potential frustration by sticking to 98 so that's my advice.
    Whaddya mean invalid parameters?!

9,000 gigs of ram and it still can't answer a simple question!

Did it not occur to you that hundreds, if not thousands, of people have tried to do this sort of thing, and someone might have come up with a solution?

I was just looking at that thread where a few of us (I think Portnoyd, SoulBlazer, and maybe someone else?...and myself) went and played a bunch of this game multiplayer over the internet. Mostly what I remember is us goofing around for about 20 minutes trying to get that basketball through the hoop on the recreation level's b-ball court. Good times.

That is a great site, Jorpho - I will keep that in mind. I'm sure a lot of those tips will probably likewise work for Thief Gold and whatnot. But yeah - the FAQ on that site will pretty much help you through it:

Although fahlim is right...if you have a Windows98 box up, you'll save yourself a lot of headache. It's really too bad that Virtual Machine doesn't support Direct3D yet.
You are startled by a grim snarl. Before you, you see 1 Red dragon. Will your stalwart band choose to (F)ight or (R)un?

That's really my only issue with VM, otherwise it's great for a lot of older stuff and is a nice alternative to DOSBox/Compatibility mode.

For the record, I am game for future SS2 multiplayer madness.

The problem with SS2 is that it can run on a processor that has more than 1 core

That is just one of the many problems it has, many of which have been discussed at the links I posted two months ago, sir.
