When did rental exclusive become confirmed enough that VGA would slab it on their slab?

Unless I missed a recent discovery, it's still hearsay.

Wait, the game was a rental exclusive?

Supposedly. The rental exclusive designation was attached to the game very early in the NES collecting scene and it stuck ever since. I'm not aware of any confirmation of such so that's why I was asking.

Regarding that whole early on thing, a lot of declarations about rarity, sale, value, etc, both correct and incorrect, were generated from who knows for what reason from 1997 to 2001. Some were confirmed, some were debunked, others keep rolling forward like they are what they should be. A decent amount of prices for NES games were set by these urban legends as well as Funco and they just haven't equilibrated for what we know now.

It's quite hard to come by, ~$1000 complete as it is and add in the sealed games factor and you can just multiply that by a gorrillion.

The starting price is purposely unreasonable but fielded offers will likely be in the $10k-$20k range which is reasonable in the world of sealed NES games (but unreasonable just about anywhere else).

ugh. Sealed game collectors. I dont get that crap. Some people "Preserve" them for the future, others are just psycho. I hope someone buys this, opens it 20 years from now, and it doesnt work. That would be a funny stake in the heart! ....and it very well could happen. Id like to know my games have been played before, and that they work.

The sad part is that no one will ever, ever open this game. It's not even the VGA slab that would ensure this: someone will pay big bucks for this, repeatedly, as it changes hands. They'll never flush all that money away by tearing the shrink off.

For cheaper games, it's definitely possible but the top tier? Not a chance. I've opened a few in my time. My complete Contra and QBert were sealed but the reason I opened it was that I had 10 of each at the time and about 30 more Contras and 100 more Qberts available to me.

    Meeeeeemmooories.

I still can't find any confirmation on rental exclusive. Some say Blockbuster only, some say rental stores in general - npne say where they got this information from. Really looking for firm evidence. I mean, nothing changes the fact that the game sealed is balls rare, but that claim of rental exclusive on the slab is intriguing.

The rental thing was done by VGA without any prompting. Mark and I have no further proof as to whether or not the game was a rental exclusive. What I can say is that the game did come from a closed video-rental store, and it was not a Blockbuster. I've heard the rental thing for years, but just like you I consider it hearsay without any hard proof.

And your assessment of the auction is point on Port. We're not really expecting $50K, but we did receive offers between $12-$15k before evening getting the game in our hands.

Considering the chunk of change eBay will get, you should've taken it to GameGavel. :P

Nope. At least there you won't get hit with what is it now, a 10% or 15% eBay sale fee? That's still a LOT of money.

I really hope you guys can sell the game outside of eBay, because I'd hate seeing them profit out of an item like this. Considering my latest issues with sales there, all it takes is a scammer to seriously hurt you guys.

I think the goal is to have eBay/Paypal protection on the sale. I know when I sold our NWC, I most definitely wanted that. I don't think it's an issue of exposure (anyone who wants this will find out about it).

    @BeaglePuss:

At least that kills the Blockbuster exclusive angle. Funny that VGA put it on themselves. Thanks for answering my question.

Well, it's the only sealed one that exists. Can't blame them for setting their own price. But really, this is that sealed ducktales 2 all over again. It's just going to sit online forever. nobody would be willing to pay that much.

You hope we sell it for $45,000? Thanks!

Not that it makes a difference, but it's a VGA 80+. I could care less about the grade, I did it for seal authentication and to give buyers piece of mind. We all know your views on VGA, but many people actually enjoy buying slabbed games.

Slabbing makes perfect sense in this instance, also eBay listing. No quibbling from me.

In coin grading, unusual features like double die strikes or over-dates etc. are noted. The rental exclusive thing is pretty much the same deal. It's noted there because it is a rare thing to happen across.

Oh yes. Unless we see a feedback this sale was not legit. We know it.

My personal dislike of VGA aside, I'm just concerned you guys could get screwed over. Like I have. Repeatedly.

I read about what happened to you, and it fucking sucks, no doubt about it. I myself lost out on $3,800 from a scam, so I certainly know how it feels to be on the receiving side of it.

What do you personally suggest to ensure that it doesn't happen though? I mean, I'd like to sell it, and EBay just seems like the best, and albeit not always safe, safest way to sell it.

I'm certainly all ears. Once this thing makes it's way to gamesniped, I don't think advertising it would be an issue. Gamegavel is going to have the same issues as EBay, if not more-so, so it's just not a viable tool for me to use for this sale.
