Default Oniken, the NES game that never was

Saw a post about this one on the Indiegames blog, but didn't see any discussion here. I'm actually kind of torn about whether to put this in the "classic" or "modern" forums, but:

    http://www.oniken.net/p/about.html

Can't play this one until I get home, but based on the video I'm starting to think that this may be one of the best things to come into being since Retro Game Challenge, which was IMO a work of genius for classic gamers who love the NES era.

Thoughts? Anyone played this? Or even heard about it?

No. Haven't heard or played... I will soon fix that, the game looks pretty cool. You get to throw grenades into a robotic polar bears face! Aces.

I was following this for a bit over on the Strider Citadel last year. I must try it out one of these days.

2:09 They seem to be lifting some things from other franchises. *coughPredatorcough*

Still, looks like a great NES-esque game!

Oh c'mon. There's Battletoads, Strider, Shatterhand, Contra, Ninja Gaiden... Even some Mega Man X! What game influence in action platforming isn't in there?

I tried both this and Ninja Senki this weekend, and overall really liked both of them - the NES-type gameplay is so dead-on it's sheer classic bliss. Couldn't get them to recognize my XBOX 360 gamepad for some reason...not sure why. Kind of detracted from the experience...but I'm determined to get them to work.

Each time I see things like this I wish people would take a stab at making them run on actual hardware. Maybe it's just too much effort.

It's not official but apparently a fan translation is in the works:

Looks like a game that would probably kick my ass. I'd love to try it though.
