Default FPS evolution is needed, Syndicate may be the answer.

Yes this is a remake of sorts of the old isometric classic, but as a first person shooter. With Rage looking underwhelming, Deus Ex: Human Revolution being ho-hum and just about every FPS'er just being the same ole, this could breathe some new life into the genre.

Pretty good detailed preview at gamespy and you gotta check out the video, first video of a game to wow me in a while, looks very promising.

Syndicate Wars is badass, and while not similar at all, after seeing the Syndicate trailer, I'm somewhat interested. Have to see more of it before making a judgment on whether I'm getting it or not, but I'll be keeping a look out for more details on the gameplay once released.

    ...

Look for the leaked script. Read it, then tell me you're still hopeful.

    Go on.

A remake of a game from the 90s isn't what I'd consider evolution, but the genre has grown so stagnant that at this point I think people will look to just about anything.

I've seen the trailer on XBL and it looked pretty impressive.....but so did the trailers for Homefront and Brink. I haven't played Brink yet but everyone I know told me to avoid it. I'm a big fps fan and I'll pretty much play anything in the genre atleast once. It may seem like theres no innovation left but it's usally in little small burst such as the new game types Treyarch added to Black Ops(one in the chamber, gun game, etc.) They aren't all mind blowing but like I said, they are all taking babysteps to breath new life into the genre. And seeing as how the fps genre is the most popular in the US today I'd say they are doing a pretty good job. But as usual, you can't please everybody.

I'd rather go back to the great old days of having dozens of short levels and absolute freedom.
Hard Reset looks like a step in the right direction as far as the freedom part goes. You don't 'fail' the mission by not following arbitrary objectives; you fail by getting killed.

Here's a gameplay video of Syndicate. Does have good graphics and a good setting. With all the readings of amount of ammo, enemy drops, etc, with its depth of field, the game would probably look pretty amazing in 3D. Unfortunately other than the few quirks, there's really nothing that stands out as anything more than another fps with a storyline.

I lot of the more impressive action moments I've seen look like they're scripted/contextual events. It'll probably be a fun ride but I don't see any kind of innovation in there.

I wish more companies would take note of the Killzone gameplay. I honestly do think KZ2 and 3 have some of the best most polished, intuitive and innovative controls in any recent FPS.

Speaking of fps games, I still need to play FEAR 3, Crysis 1+2, and Deus Ex: Human Revolution to get caught up for the year. I suppose I should play Brink too since I already own it.

I definitely agree with you with Killzone 2 in particular. I really liked the weight to the controls and some of the little touches like six-axis effecting your sniper accuracy and things like that. Its just unfortunate that because those things were criticized along with the awful dialog Killzone 2 they chose to "fix" the former and not the latter. Now KZ3 largely feels like another COD especially with the removal of online servers rather then just matchmaking. [/KZrantmode]

Anyways this game looks fun, I loved the original and FPS is the go-to genera for reboots now. If the campaign is longer then 6 hours or has some sort of extensive replay value then I'll pick it up, if not then I'll pass.

I will say that 2 minutes into this video though I have serious doubts about this game. I was hoping for something akin to a namless/faceless "agent" who was a puppet with no personality or motivations like the original game's agents. This is rather disappointing and I already get the vibe that this is just another shooter except with a dub-step soundtrack and blue light filters.

I want a remake or at least a successor to the original, in the same play style.
