    Default Are Wiis still softmoddable?

Are the days of old when all you needed was an SD card and an old copy of Twilight Princess to get homebrew running on a Wii now long gone?

It's hard to find up to date, accurate information on this kind of thing.

I think its even easier now, look into the "letterbomb" hack. I myself may install it once I beat Skyward Sword or just get a Wii exclusively for the mod.

Using Lego Indiana Jones works on the Red Wii.

I should have said: If it's that easy, why does it seem that people are still buying modchips?

Also, it's highly unlikely for something to go wrong, right? I gather the worst thing that will happen is that the next time Nintendo releases an update to the System Menu anything hacked in will be gone.

Hacked mine again recently to have potential access to Xenoblade in the future. One of the boys had allowed Big N to do an update a little while ago and it basically un-hacked the Wii. No damage or anything, just no access to random apps or whatnot.

Hacking it this second time via SDcard apps was even easier/quicker than the first time hacking it via similar methods.

This website should have everything you need to determine weather your wii is hackable or not.

I noticed that. I will assume your endorsement means that it is up to date.

What confuses me is that http://wiibrew.org/wiki/Homebrew_setup currently doesn't list Letterbomb. I'm also not entirely clear on what HackMii does, aside from serving as an installer; the wiki doesn't seem to have a page for it, per se.

Another question that may need to be asked: If you do the letterbomb hack, can you still play official Wii games online without raising a red flag (and incurring the wrath of Nintendo)?

While I'm not sure whether going standard online is going to flag you and call out Nintendo's pimp hand... Best bet is, if it concerns you, refrain. Or get a second Wii for unmodded play. They should come in Cracker Jacks soon enough.

Honestly, if the answer is that it's still safe at this point, that's unlikely to change.

If you have a 4.3 or below it's like cake.

    Uhh..

    http://wiibrew.org/wiki/Homebrew_setup#Letterbomb

    and..

    http://wiibrew.org/wiki/Letterbomb

The first link is just a redirect from the page you posted from the contents section right under the opening page. Although I am kinda being a dick it literally was half a page down from the link you posted, with the other link found by searching letterbomb. Hackmii is the installer for the Homebrew Channel (basically) after you use some sort of exploit to force the wii to install it.

Al long as you don't system update you should be fine. The Homebrew Channel isn't just shorthand, it really functions like just another Nintendo Channel on the wii menue. There is even a Homebrew Browser that functions similar to a mobile device store with many applications and homebrew games you can download and install.

I've played Tatsunoko vs Capcom and Mario Kart online since I've modded my system. Like the other guy stated, just be careful of system updates and you should be good. Generally speaking if Nintendo puts out an update that removes the Homebrew Channel, the authors of it will put out their own update to beat Nintendo's after a day or two, after which you can do the system update if you want.

    Craig
They changed the DVD drive in them at one point to remove the ability to read recordable DVD discs, this was before the black Wii's came out (in the US anyway) so unless you swap your drive out with an older one, you can't play copied discs on that Wii.

You can still hook up a USB hard drive and use a USB loader, though.

Pretty much all you're gonna miss out is Gamecube backups, since there's no real good way to run those with a softmod if your drive is the newer version.

So, back to my other question: if this is all so easy, what's the point of a Wii modchip?

The primary purpose of a mod-chip is to allow you to play game copies on your wii. Apparently it was used as an earlier method to crack the wii but now with the easier softmod methods its primarily used for piracy.
