"And the book says: 'We may be through with the past, but the past ain't through with us.'"
This is not an easy choice. From the nominees, I've played Bastion, Minecraft, Mighty Switch Force!, Sonic CD, Back to the Future The Game, Terraria, and VVVVVV. It's easy enough to make a choice when you just have 2 or 3 to choose from, but when it is 7 the choice is not simple!
Ultimately I voted for Terraria. I found Minecraft disappointing and frustrating; Bastion was cool with the narrator and all but the PC controls could have been better (no support for generic USB controllers, keymapping for gamepads doesn't work well because the game expects you to use the mouse, too many keys for easy keyboard+mouse controls, etc.); Mighty Switch Force! is fun and uses the 3D effect really well and reminds me of Mega Man X, but it is short at only 16 levels; SONIC CD was a good re-release but it was missing many of the vocals to Japanese songs like "You Can Do Anything" and "Cosmic Eternity," really altering the mood of the game; BTTF was good but not great; and VVVVVV, while awesome and reminiscent of Metal Storm, had annoying escort missions (I'm sure many of you remember the "fun" of escorting Violet. ) and hasn't seen additional content added - not that it really needs it but...
Terraria is probably the game I spent the most hours with out of all of these... perhaps even more hours than all the others combined. It is a game that grows with you, so the stronger your character is, the more of the world there is to see. It is "more game" than Minecraft and easier to navigate too. The multiplayer is fun and enjoyable for beginners and veterans. And there are a ton of items to collect and craft into even greater weapons, armors, and decorations. The boss fights are challenging. And the game's developer keeps adding more and more content, making the game a greater and greater value for new buyers and old owners.
