Lightbulb Double Fine Raises $700,000 In 24 Hours With Crowdfunding [Slashdot]

redletterdave writes "San Francisco-based game developer Double Fine took to Kickstarter to fund its next game project, and so far, the studio has enjoyed unprecedented success through crowdsourcing. The project, which was announced by the studio's founder Tim Schafer on Wednesday night, has already raised more than $700,000 in less than 24 hours. The funding frenzy has set new Kickstarter records for most funds raised in the first 24 hours, and highest number of backers of all-time, though both of those numbers are still growing. Schafer says he will build a 'classic point-and-click adventure game' in a six-to-eight month time frame, and will document the entire production process for fans to observe and give input on the game's development, which 'will actually affect the direction the game takes.'"

Double Fine has yet to make a bad game, can't wait for this one. I'm glad people have proven that adventure games are still a profitable genre.

I dunno if you can count raising 700,000 as proof that any game would be profitable.

And also, I agree with Kupo, Brutal Legend would qualify as a bad game. Good looking and wonderful sound track sure but awful gameplay. If they had foregone the "stage battles" or made an effort to better balance them it would have been quite a bit more fun to me at least.

They've raised over a million bucks. That's pretty amazing.

I liked Brutal Legend. It wasn't anything close to what I expected, and to be honest they probably chose the wrong genre, but I had fun with it.

The stage battles were pretty difficult, though.

I wouldn't know since they never released it on PC.

Yeah, maybe I'm crazy, but I really enjoyed Brutal Legend. I think they didn't promote it right -- everyone thought that it was going to be a beat-em-up -- but at the end of the day, it was a cool game if you knew what you were getting into.
