Smile Playing it Old School – Max Payne and the birth of Game-Noir

I just published my first Playing It Old School in several months. This is a weekly column I try to keep that focus on old video games and how they have impacted modern gaming along with pop culture.

In Playing it Old School – Max Payne and the birth of Game-Noir, I look at how Max Payne embraced the concept of film-noir by taking the darkest and grittiest tone of the genre than blending the auteurism of John Woo. Playing it Old School also looks at how Max Payne redefined gaming and what the upcoming third installment has to live up too.

I'm looking for feedback on how I did, what I missed and what I could write about in the next article.

Good read, but "game noir" was around long before Max Payne. Look up Deja Vu for starters. And welcome to DP!

Even though snatcher was technically "cyberpunk" I always viewed it as noir.

An article about Max Payne... in Classic Gaming... Niet!

    **shimmy to Modern Gaming**
Because it makes no attempt to be great, it is therefore extremely great.

Intrigue (1986) on C64 and Apple ][ counts for sure:

also some Infocom murder mysteries (deadline, suspect, witness) are in that league :

Thanks for the feed back as I'm learning a lot; also sorry for putting it in the wrong category. I'll remember that next time.

Even for more recent games I would have thought of Grim Fandango before Max Payne for noir.
