Grand Theft Auto (almost all of them)
    Fallout 3
    Mass Effect
    Mass Effect 2
Crysis ( I have no qualms about saying how much graphics are a big part of this game, but it is also a damn good FPS.)
I've never played the original Crysis, however I've heard the game isn't very good and it was used in nothing more than a pc spec benchmark. As for the rest, aside from the GTA4 series and San Andreas, these games suck.

Anyways, I'll say that most games released this gen are crap, but that doesn't mean everything this gen is. I will follow the Gooch's idea as he did list a lot of great games. Current gen games only, not including portables.

    Mirror's Edge
    Dante's Inferno
    Devil May Cry 4
    Lords of Shadow
    X Men Origins Wolverine
    Saboteur
    Uncharted 1, 2, and 3
    Gears of War 1, 2, and 3
    Yakuza 3 and 4
    Demon's Souls
Twisted Metal (which I absolutely love, except the game has some of the shittiest online servers ever in a game.)
    Batman Arkham Asylum/City
    Armored Core 4/For Answer
    Valkyria Chronicles
    Resident Evil 5
    Sacred 2
    Stranglehold
    Infamous 2
    Siren the Bloodcurse
    3D Dot Game Heroes
    Heavy Rain
    Saints Row the Third
    Final Fantasy Fables Chocobo's Dungeon
    Silent Hill Shattered Memories

I still believe this gen sucks balls and has nothing on most previous console generations, but there are enough good games that come out on the new consoles to keep my backlog on an almost indefinite hold. Even with how bad most of the games are, some of the games released this gen could be considered some of the best games ever made.
Everything in the above post is opinion unless stated otherwise.

I find it hilarious that guy thought infamous 2 was good but thinks mass effect 1&2 sucked

both of the infamous games were quite mediocre.

Sounds like the OP would like to spend some time in the "Oasis".

The whole idea of playing retro games in a holodeck simulator is pretty much the basis for this book, which is an awesome read BTW

I don't know man. If you added more fighters to that library, they couldn't possibly be worse than what's already there.
If the system had gotten ports of MKII and Virtua Fighter, I'd be pretty happy about it.

I love retro games and that's what I play most, but to say that all modern games suck is pushing it.

I really like the Grand Theft Auto Series. I bought PS2 just to play those. GTA 1 and 2 are great. GTA III, Vice City, LSS, VCS are all amazing games.

I never played GTA4 or any of the newer ones. But like I said saying that all modern games suck is absolute dumb talk.

When making these modern vs. classic arguments, people tend to compare the entirety of classic gaming to the current generation at the time.
By those standards, modern gaming can never compete.

from the rather immature rant of the OP it seems we have one of these here poser gamers that thinks they look cool if they only like retro. ZOMG im teh h@rcOre as i rock it oldskoolz, all games become retro after enough years have passed. When you actually grow up you will realise this.

Real gamers love games from any year & can quite happily play the most ancient to the most modern. Totally writing off anything modern just shows you up as a failiure of a gamer.

I concur. There has been a sizable handful of new school games that have made for some incredible gaming- not enough to completely forget about the inundation of First Person Shooters, but enough to make the statement that all non-retro games suck absolutely asinine. Any man or woman who can't enjoy Katamari Damacy has no soul, retro or otherwise.

There was a rather dated book about video games that I checked out from my library. In one chapter there were interviews with pioneer "retro" gamers who praised the magnificence of the Atari 2600 and lamented how the Nintendo's games had no personality and were all derivative. I couldn't help but chuckle a little. I can understand having rose tinted glasses for all things nostalgia in video games or otherwise, but to crap on everything post your glory days is ridiculous. But, you know, perhaps once fixed screen video games died, the entire spirit of gaming went with it... That's why I only play Super Mario Bros. Special by Hudson and the original Mario Bros. when I want my Mario fix.

We still have to hold that f*cking controller and stare at a stupid screen. I refuse to do either. I want to be in the game...calling the shots and moving around like I do in the real world. Only thing I see meeting this criteria is the holodeck.
Games like Fallout 3, Fallout: New Vegas, Skyrim and Oblivion pretty much offer everything you've described, minus the holodeck. They offer virtual worlds where you can determine the outcome for just about everything but the game's ending.

And all this talk about "but there are gems in current systems" blah blah blah is just a bunch of crap. These are the same people who line up to buy re-released versions of Ocarina...further supporting the stupidity of companies...so yeah...your opinion means nothing to me.

    thank you.
I used to love playing the Atari 2600 back in the day, but even I can't admit that it offers a great gaming experience today. It has a few gems here and there, but for the most part, the library is pretty mediocre.

I tried to play Super Mario World, but when I couldn't walk around a goomba in 3-D I got so mad that I stomped on the SNES till it turned to dust. Then I went and bitch slapped some flying turtle moron asshole in New Super Mario Bros. Wii

I won't totally write off all modern games, but the main difference between now and the Classic period (mid-80s through the 90s) is that then filler games weren't the most popular (sports games aside), while now Halo-clones are the popular games. No one ever played and no one will remember Time Killers. The same can't be said for the plethora of repetitive first person shooters that currently plague modern gen systems.

This topic's answer is simple: inept programming.

Often a common symptom is bad framerates.

It crumbles various games today. All the inventive gameplay, environments, and voice acting one could muster, is nothing when actual play feels sluggish in motion.

Sorry but users who find "acceptable" from a development viewpoint the performance of things like Mass Effect, Morrowind, or GTA4 on consoles, Last Remnant 360 without HDD install, etc... Really have no professional place in the business. As much as they're welcome to still play and enjoy games from outside our industry!

The thing that really turns me away from modern consoles is the simple fact that the big games are just plain better on PC.
That wasn't the case in the 16-bit days. If you wanted to play a decent shmup or fighting game, consoles were the only way to go.

While I'm not sure if it's "funny," I share Homer's sentiment.

I gave up on new systems after the Dreamcast. 99% of the time I am playing Saturn. I guess it also depends on how much free time you can commit to gaming.
