    Default Another slimmed down PS3?!

http://ca.ign.com/articles/2012/07/1...tation-3-model Why doesn't Sony just drop the price of the current model to $199 to sell more units instead of bringing out a new model?

one word: Cost. Sony has made another version of the PS3 to reduce cost per unit. I actually think this is a good move. I never thought that the PS3 "Slim version 1" was small enough. I actually am happy to see them making "finally" a cost friendly model. I hope that it is made with quality parts. I still have an early model PS2 slim model and love it.

Hm... While blurry has hell, I want to say this looks like a top-loading model ala PSX, and PS2 Slim? That would be excellent.

    Looks horrible .....

Even if the current slim model is not the best looking console of the generation, its ok ... hope its fake and the new slim model is better designed

Hmm, I still can't get into the new designs just based on the fact that they aren't backwards compatible with the PS2. It's a necessity for me.

I hope so too. At the very least, you would have a way to get your discs out if it craps out on you. The only thing I'm concerned about is the reliability of the unit.

Hopefully, Sony has learned from the design mistakes of it's other models.

There's one big thing I'm kinda worried about with this new model. Does anyone see an opening to upgrade the memory? Since I've already had to upgrade my disk space on all of my Ps3's it comes to mind immediately. I mean it would be smart to keep the option since even the 4gb Xbox Slim still retains a slot to increase the hard drive space.

It doesn't look like it's slimmer than the current PS3 slim. It looks slightly fatter, though the length of it looks shorter. There's also that portion of plastic removed underneath making it sort of look like a slimmer version of the original PS3's design.
Everything in the above post is opinion unless stated otherwise.

The shots at this stage of the current redesign looked just as awful. Myself and many others even proclaimed it as a fake. A few nuts even thought it was some Asian clone system utilizing the Playstation 3 branding to sell something like a cheap NOAC (Although why anyone would think some fly by night operator would do that while completely changing the case design at the same time is anyone's guess).

Yet the product on store shelfs was at the very least average looking when you see it in person.

Poor quality pictures for starters. I think many would have a tough time locating the HD slot on existing PS3 models with similar quality pictures. Particularly if they don't know exactly where to look such as is the case here if this is legitimate.

I've been waiting on a PS3 price drop to $200 ever since my old PS3 got the YLOD a couple of months ago. I hope this means a drop is coming soon.

If Sony doesn't do an official drop this year you can always wait for those amazing Black Friday sales in 4 months. As for the new version, I don't really see the point. If it's just about cutting cost they should already be able to do that with the current slim. The parts and components to put those together have obviously come down since it was launched back in 2009 so they should focus on making that cheaper and expanding their current market share. As for reliability, I haven't heard of many problems with the current slims so I can't see that being the reason either. But I'm sure we'll hear some official announcement at one of the upcoming shows soon enough.

I can understand the 250GB and 500GB models, but the 16GB model makes no sense to me unless you plan on owning a handful of games at best?

why not? Any time you can make some slimmer that was/is huge and improve reliability and reduce cost it makes perfect sense

Well I wouldn't mind getting one of the 16gb if the price is right. It would be perfect in another room or as a dedicated media streamer. If they leave the HDD upgrade option it would be even better.

Maybe the next major firmware update will allow you to use an external drive to install games and such?

Anyway, add me to the list of people hoping for a top loading drive.

Depending on set up I might be game for this. My fat PS3 is chugging along just fine but it really is rarely used. If the HDD is exchangeable, I can just take the one from my PS3 and transplant to the 16 gig model and keep the old one around as a backup and to play PS2 games (or I guess I should just pick up a PS2 for that honestly) depending on how much it costs that is.

They're trying to cut costs, so there's no way they'd use anything but standard hard drives.
It's possible that you may need to open the system to swap it, but unless Sony changes the way the firmware interacts with the HDD, you'll be able to upgrade.

Just a quick observation that supports the reality of this top-loading disc drive.

Sony changed the context of the "eject disc" feature on the PS3 XMB in the last firmware (or the one before that one) from "EJECT DISC" to "REMOVE DISC".

Remove Disc would make much more sense on a top-loading drive tray than "eject", and as a better universal description across all models.
