Default Local store got a ton of SFC Imports

So I was there today, and the dude had a rack full of Super Famicom games.

I can't remember every game I saw, but here are the ones that stood out to me:

Der Langrisser, Dead Dance, Assault Suits Valken, Acrobat Mission, Hello Pac-Man (Pac-Man 2), Chou Makaimura... Unfortunately I got there just as it was about to close so I had to look quickly. They also had some Final Fantasy, Anqelique, and a few anime tie-ins, including one with a ferret or weasel on the cover that had the word "Rascal" (I think--it was in Japanese) on it. Oh, and Super Puyo Puyo.

I bought two games. Dead Dance (which turned out to be a fighting game) and some other game with a title I couldn't completely read. It was by Pack-In Video and I think it was called "Ma Onna Tachi... (I couldn't read the rest). This latter one turned out to be interesting. If you turn it on and wait, it starts up with a pan across a dark forest until it shows a teenager hanging from a branch. It turned out to be some sort of choose-your-own adventure book in video game form. I'll have to study Japanese something fierce because it seems interesting.

Anyway, is there anything I should keep an eye out for?

    Thanks in advance.

You're lucky. I once found some Super Famicom games around here, bought them up straight away, and haven't seen any since.

Assault Suit Valken is the Japanese release of Cybernator. I think it has a bunch more story to it and slightly different gameplay.

Also, Dead Dance was released stateside as Tuff-E-Nuff.

I'm guessing you saw Araiguma Rasukaru (Raccoon Rascal), which is a puzzle game based on a Japanese anime that was based on an American children's book.

i love the game boxes more than the american ones. I got a chance to pick up Final Fantasy 6 and 4 at the retro store, beautiful art covers. How much was the FF game? Id buy it for a good price just for the cool box.

Another weird thing about Dead Dance: The voice clip when you throw a Fireball sounds like it was lifted from Ranma 1/2 Hard Battle.

Was Acrobat Mission ever released stateside?

Another weird thing I just remembered: The SFC version of Dragon's Lair was called Dragon Magic.

    That's it! That's the one!

He had completes of I+II, V and VI for somewhere in the $40s or $50s, and cartridge-onlies of IV and V for like $20 or so.

EDIT: Just recalled, he also had Ys V (couldn't tell if it was regular or the Expert version. Cart-only either way).

Dragon Quest or Final Fantasy? Either way, that sounds way too high as games in both series are fairly common.

I meant Final Fantasy. He does have Dragon Quest V and VI though.

Was it かまいたちの夜 (Kamaitachi no Yoru/Night of the Sickle Weasel)? If so, there's an episode of Game Center CX about that one.

I'd get SPP and the Rascal game. I wrote a little write-up on the Rascal game here

Quite good and unknown, you definitely won't regret picking it up.

It's a cute, unique "action" puzzler. Instead of blocks falling, you move the rascal around to maneuver the blocks. It was an ever so slightly different twist to the traditional puzzler formula that made it stand out a bit to me.

No wait, looks like it's this one:

The two games look very similar though.

This one is it. The cart label uses a bit of the box art.

Among the imports, where there any Satellaview 8M Memory Packs or BS-X cartridges?

I think Rascal is a tad on the uncommon side, so I'd say it's worth picking up.

Sounds like someone unloaded a bunch of commons at the shop. Still it's always a treat to find JPN SFC games in the wild in the west... especially in quantities greater than 1-5. Those SFC RPGs are overpriced. You can't even give those RPGs away in Japan. About 10-25 USD would be fair and still would yield a fine profit.

Yeah, very slightly uncommon. I'd stick to titles like those if you're considering a pickup. However imho the game is very meh.

I read your article on that game awhile ago, made me really want it! And yes, the game is quite uncommon as whenever I search ebay for a copy (I only buy CIB) it usually comes up empty.

Start with Famicom if that's your goal. There's almost no Kanji. But beware that RPGs tend to deliberately use some archaic language (そなた instead of あなた, じゃ instead of だ, and other weird things that won't be obvious in your average dictionary).

    Sadly not.

Okay, here's the games I think I'll pick up next time:

    -Super Puyo Puyo
    -Ys V
    -Rascal
    -Assault Suits Valken
    -Acrobat Mission

And if something else catches my fancy, I'll take it.
