Default A Sports game for someone who hates sports?

I have never owned (or played) a sports game for a system since the 1980s, with the exception of the Tony Hawk series. Anyway, after years of avoidance of sports (which includes playing, watching, listening to), I'm curious to pick up either a basketball, hockey, or soccer game for the PS2 or GC. So, with the fact that I don't like sports in mind, can you recommend a sports game that I might enjoy as a gamer?

Well maybe you'll like an arcade type sports game...you should try NBA Street (1 or 2). Its a really fun arcade basketball game.

Basketball: NBA Street Vol. 2. Hockey: NHL Hitz 2003. Soccer: Sega Soccer Slam (GC version). All arcade-sports games, with Street by far the best.

I don't know, anybody know if dodgeball games are out or being released sometime soon for a next-gen console?

I hate sports, and here are the sports games I enjoy:

Waverace 64 and Blue Storm (GC)
Any of the Tony Hawks (PSX/PS2)
    Sega Soccer Slam (GC)
Ken Griffey Jr. Presents MLB (SNES)
    NBA JAM (SNES)
that first hockey game for the N64....can't remember the name (N64)

I don't know for next-gen systems, but Nintendo World Cup for NES would be good, and I know people that hate soccer but do like International Superstar Soccer Deluxe for SNES.

I'll second (or third) the arcade basketball suggestion. NBA Jam, Showtime, Street, Hoopz, etc. I pretty much like them all.

Plus, I'd say most of the NeoGeo sports games are fun for a non-sport fan. I know most people don't have a Neo at home, but almost every time I see one in an arcade, it's got Baseball Stars on it.

Also, I LOVE LOVE LOVE Mario Golf. That game is big fun on a N64 cart, and I'd rather watch paint dry than watch golf. The GBC version is very very VERY good also.

Another great one, if you have a DC, is Sport Jam. A late release that everyone slept on, and a *gasp* arcade port, but it's really fun. It's basically a bunch of sports themed mini-games, think Track and Field with a ton more variety.

Last suggestion, Virtua Tennis. You should be able to find this dirt cheap for DC, and if you don't have a DC, check out any of the ports around.

    Default ss

Wakeboarding Unleashed or the new Downhill domination. If i still had a next-gen system these are the two games i'd want-sports related.

All-Star Slammin' D-Ball for the PS1 is okay. Super Dodge Ball Advance for the GBA (and Game Boy Player) is very good. I don't expect to ever see a PS2/GCN/Xbox dodgeball game, at least not in the States.

Ah, I've been on the receiving end of this question many many many times.

I have a "top 3 suggestions" for you.

    1. Virtua Tennis. Is tennis REALLY a sport? Well, there's scoring, but the game is a lot like Pong. Very easy to pick up and play. Even novice players can be making all-star shots in no time.

    2. Beach Spikers. If you're a gal, the game is cool because it's gals on the court, and like Virtua Tennis, very easy to pick up and play with just one button. And if you're a guy... well, these computer ladies are looking a little TOO good lately.

    3. Triple Play 2001 (or really ANY decent baseball game that has a home run derby). Play the home run derby. It's a one-button affair and there's nothing quite like the feeling of driving a ball deep into the night. One of the stages in TP2001 has a bleacher area full of targets for extra fun.

I remember those, and Super Dodge Ball Advance is a great sports game (it's more of a sport than golf :shudder. And hey, there have been many dodgeball games spanning many different generations (and horse racing sims are still being produced) so hopefully a next-gen dodgeball game isn't too far away. :fingers crossed:

NBA STREET VOLUME 2. I didn't even watch basketball on TV before playing this game, now I talk about basketball all the time. And ESPN Classic is one of my favorite channels. ^_^

HOT SHOTS GOLF 3. Once you get into this game, you can almost watch golf on TV without falling asleep. Almost.

ATV OFFROAD FURY. If you consider racing a sport...

VIRTUA TENNIS. Oh my God, this is such a great game...one of the only things I play at my crappy arcade.

NINTENDO WORLD CUP. Soccer + River City Ransom = Heaven.

Thanks for the responses. I'm going to borrow a few of these games and see what I like best this week.
