I guess first we'd need to know which ones you've actually played. Going to assume the Super Mario/Mega Man/Castlevania bases are all covered.
Have you played Batman?
New Comics for the Week of 10-03-12
A "new" one? Battle Kid 2.
Fox's Peter Pan and the Pirates.
Welcome to the misery of my childhood
Here's ten that I can think of that you probably haven't played that are oh so worth playing:
Power Blade
Kabuki Quantum Fighter
Adventure Island 4
Bucky Ohare
Darkwing Duck
Kickmaster
Kid Nikki
Wizards & Warriors 3
Metal Force
Vice: Project Doom

Clash at Demonhead?
Have you played Faxanadu yet? It's a platformer that has RPG and adventure elements. Kinda Like Zelda II without the top-down map screens between levels, caves and towns.
Also I highly recommend you try to find two Camerica releases:
Big Nose the Caveman
The Fantastic Adventures of Dizzy
Big Nose the Caveman acts kind of like a platform shooter where if you get hit you lose your powerups. It is best to practice a lot so you can try to get through the game without getting hit. It makes it a lot easier toward the end. Still it has plenty of enemies to defeat by swinging your club, boss battles at the end of every level and a catchy soundtrack. Avoid its sequel Big Nose Freaks Out which is very bland in comparison and has no background music to keep you interested.
The Fantastic Adventures of Dizzy is a platformer that makes you use your brain. You are allowed to carry three items at once and your only defense against enemies is to dodge them. Your goal is to find items scattered throughout the world and figure out where and what to use each item for. You might struggle to start with but as you figure things out you'll get farther and farther through the game each time. It's a very rewarding experience to finally finish the game and memorize what everything is used for.
And I will do likewise:
Clash at Demonhead: A rather engaging game of unusual charm for a NES platformer that I'm putting it on top of my list to make it stand out. Here is the Happy Video Game Nerd review that does an excellent job of conveying just how special this game is.
Duck Tales
Adventure Island
Bionic Commando
Metal Storm
Phantom Fighter: One of these days someone is going to try this damn game and thank me for it once they get into the groove of it. It will happen- one day.
Felix the Cat
Kabuki Quantum Fighter
... and what the hell. Here are some B-List games that are worth picking up for cheap just for kicks:
Ninja Kid: It's an early game that is atmospheric and kinda fun.
Kid Kool: Flawed yet strangely compelling.
Also, check out Ninja Senki, a neo-retro platformer that is flippin' sweet. I know it's bnot a NES game but the programmer recommends playing it with a NES controller, so there.

Rockin' Kats is a really good platformer that is sort of like Bionic Commando (Which is another good game if you have not played it already.).
I can't agree with lumping KKid Nikki: Radical Ninja in with the bad DE games. I mean c'mon, it isn't nearly as bad as many other Data East NES games! It stands the test of time MUCH better than the vast majority of their other games on the system!

Thanks! I have all the usual suspects, just didn't feel like listing them. Platformers are my favorite genre so I'm always on the look for new (to me at least) ones that are under the radar.
I did just pick up Kick Master a few weeks ago.
also I'm a huge Mr. Gimmick! fan boy. It's my desert island NES game (assuming there was power on a desert island)
If you have a Famicom or an adapter, I strongly recommend Hi No Tori and Don Doko Don 2.
I also second Darkwing Duck and the awesome Bucky O'Hare.
Blowing on cartridges since 1987
If he's going to take to the famicom/adapter... I always say 3 Eyes Story ("Mitsume ga Tooru" or 三つ目がとおる)
Some gameplay video... megaman-ish.

Then you can go nuts with all sorts of other famicom games.

Adventure Island! The game has fun and interesting enemies, it's insanely challenging, and the graphics and music are really kind of cool for an NES game. There are three Adventure Island games on the NES so I'd start with the first, I really do think you'll like it if you haven't tried it already.
