Exclamation Street Fighter II ported to the Nintendo Virtual Boy

    Bit of news worth sharing...

It's not April so you can rest assured that this news is not a hoax. Believe it or not but homebrew developers have somehow managed to bring Capcom's timeless Street Fighter II over to the Nintendo Virtual Boy! Luckily for us, the team behind this impressive creation have generously released a playable demo ROM for all to download.

Hah, how weird. It's interesting on a technical level, but it's kind of pointless. The Virtual Boy is lacking in games, but if homebrewers want to address that, then they should be making NEW games. Nobody cares about ports, and even though the depth is cool, pretty much no one is going to want to give up both color and multiplayer if they're in the mood to play some SFII.

Granted, those who own both a Virtual Boy and the expensive flash cart would probably be excited for anything new they can toy around with on the system. I'd like a flash cart myself someday, if only to play stuff like Bound High, but I'm more inclined to collect the legit carts I've yet to acquire.

No, showing that the VB can do a great port of SFIIT is definitely not pointless! It's a very cool accomplishment. Of course original games are nice too, and I'm hoping that VB homebrewers get to 3d game development eventually, but this is a big step forward compared to what most previous VB homebrew games looked like, I believe. Great work.

That's basically what I said. It's a technical achievement, definitely, but my point is that there are countless far better ways to play Street Fighter II so I don't picture people playing it outside the novelty of it.

Didn't the Virtual Boy have a link cable for 2 players that was never used in any official games? Perhaps... 2-player will find a way.

The link cable was never released. There are homemade ones and homebrews that support them though.

That still picture is misleading, since it's obviously not from the Virtual Boy. One person posted a couple actual pictures from the system:

one of those things that makes you wonder what could have come out if the virtual boy didn't flop so hard.

The VB flopped entirely due to itself, no outside forces. Therefore, it was truly destined to flop.

This is a nice demonstration for sure, not surprising as the hardware was 32-bit. Unfortunately, a perfectly working VB is not cheap, and the flash cart for it is very expensive now.

My guess would be more crossed eyes, headaches, and a green hue cast upon everything for hours after playing. Nothing more.

This appears to less of a port, and more someone's custom fighting game engine with a Street Fighter skin.

Exactly. It wasn't the lack of games, but the design of the hardware itself. VB actually has some quality games, like Wario Land, Vertical Force, and Teleroboxer. Mario Tennis is fun as well. But they're just difficult to play because of how irritating the graphics of the system are.

God. I wish Nintendo would rerelease their Virtual Boy catalog on the 3DS. Its so obvious.

I wonder if there's a technical limitation based on how the VB presented 3D and how the 3DS does it. But god damn it, I want to play Wario Land!

And Mario Clash. And especially Red Alarm.

I remember making a bee line to the Sears video game section to play their VB demo unit every time I went to the mall, just to play a little more of that game. It seriously blew my mind back then. The 3D was just soooooo cool.

I agree that SFII is kind of a pointless game to port to the VB, technical achievement or not. Doom would be awesome however.

Wait, so SF2 is a pointless port, but somehow Doom would be "awesome"?

Last I checked, Doom is an FPS. It would indeed be awesome to have said genre represented on a retro 3D system like the VB. The VB controller is not well equipped for fighting games, yet could easily accommodate even today's dual stick FPS gameplay with its two d-pads and triggers. Alternatively, the triggers could act as strafe right and left as they do in the PSX version of Doom. In light of the FPS genre's near-total domination of modern gaming, it is amazing how prescient Yokoi was with the design of the VB controller.

Anyway, I'm not saying it isn't cool to see SFII running on a VB, but at the same time, Doom or Wolfenstein 3D would be so much more exciting.

If you want to see a FPS on Virtual Boy, check out Insmouse no Yakata. Although the reviews of it are kind of mixed.

Maybe it looks bloodier because the whole screen is red now?
