Default Mah-Jong for SMS? Mark III? SG-1000??

    OK what is this?

It looks like a regular SMS game to me, but It seems to be a Japanese version. Does such a thing exist? I've looked for others online, I didn't find any SG-1000 carts or Mark III, wasn't the SMS an updated version of one of these?

Anyway it's not listed on the rarity lists besides for in the SG-1000 section. This game has a copyright date of 1986, the game in the database is 1983, but there again I've never seen one so it may not even be the same thing. Can someone enlighten me.

Could be a Hong Kong pirate type affair? That's not how they packaged Mark III stuff in Japan.

Possibly, but I did find this:

In a google search, maybe there was a Japanese version of the SMS?

Regardless this game isn't listed in the SMS list. Also there seems to be some US released titles listed in duplicate under the Non-US section. I thought typically that was for only the Non-US titles?

VGA do you own a copy of this? I have one that I got from Clint Dyer,it is identical to the one in the picture in every way the box and book actually says Mak Jong and the cart says Mah Jong. Clint said he had no idea what it was or where it came from and he is/was pretty much the SMS expert. The SMS EMU guys dont even have it dumped, they contacted me when i won it trying to get it off me.

BTW this is only the second one Ive seen in 10 years of SMS collecting.

Yes I own it. I believe if I'm not mistaken I received it in trade from someone on this site. It's been awhile thou. I just noticed it wasn't in the lists, and wanted to know any info on it. It looks like a regular release as far as I can tell. Except it's in Japanese.

The board & chip inside it both have SEGA on them, and it's not a EPROM, so it would lead me to believe it was released somewhere. :/

DNG, was that an error in your post, you mean the book & manual, say Mak Jong?

My picture's a little cropped but it is MAH - JONG Capital H All caps on the insert & manual, the cart, like so many other sms games, is only on the first letter.

If Clint Dyer was "the Man" when it came to the SMS, then I'm a cyborg steak-knife the size of Huston! Damn guy mighta worked for SEGA, but he obviously NEVER checked his facts.

The "Master System"was released in Japan, but was basically a Mark III in a new case with a 3D adapter and FM sound chip built in. (more like a Mark III +)
Mark III carts are skinnier than that cart.

My sources say it's from Hong Kong, but that's all that's known about this game.

My copy says Mak-Jong with a K on the Box and manual, otherwise it is identical to the one in the photo

Well that's definitely interesting! Might make a case for them being "boots" but it looks too real to be one. Like I said even the PCB hass got the Sega name on it, and mine at least has Sega stamped on the ROM, and it's actual rom not a eprom. But there being to different versions is odd. Also mine has C 1986 on both the box & manual backs, but the game itself is 1987. Here's a screen shot of mine:
