Cool Happy 23rd Birthday, Sonic The Hedgehog!

June 23rd, 1991 was the release date of the first Sonic The Hedgehog video game. Since then he has starred in many games (some great and some not-so-great), American and Japanese cartoons, American, European, and Japanese comics, tons of merchandise, and has had more friends and series reboots than anyone needs. And yet all these years later he is still alive and kicking, starring in new games, a new television show, and soon a new movie from SEGA and SONY.

This hedgehog has got some legs all right! And I'm guessing he still has many more miles left to run.

And happy birthday to me the day after! What else is cool is that I got a Sonic 1 Sega Genesis 1 bundle for my 6th birthday June 1993 which was exactly 2 years and 1 day after the game came out. And even more strange, I ordered the exact variant of my Sega Genesis bundle from ebay a couple weeks ago and it finally arrived at my apartment office yesterday on Sonic 1's birthday. If I get a chance I might go home and open it today. It's like reliving my 6th birthday at 27 while also celebrating the game's birthday. I guess this was the first console game I owned for a reason.

I'm a collector, but only to a certain extent.
Not as extreme as Rickstilwell though.[/quote]

Is this a hardcore fact, or just an internet date ? There are tons of dates for various things being released that are incorrect. Unfortunately, many websites will pick up the same incorrect date, and regurgitate the same bad info over and over, thus making it seem like the incorrect date is actually a fact.

I'm not saying the June 23rd date isn't legit, but I'm just saying that tons of supposed release dates are off the mark. At least with Sonic Tuesday, we have a date that is absolutely verifiable.

Well the Sega and Sonic Facebook accounts were both talking about the birthday so I feel they probably have a good idea of what the game was actually released.

June 23rd is shown for both Europe and USA; July 26th is shown for Japan.

I still like him, at least the old version of him. Of course I'd like to see how he'd look in a live action film.

Well then, will the new Sonic movie do? It will be a mix of live action and CGI.

I can't see anyway that it will be good, but I would love to be wrong on this.

Do you mean the fan film that came out last year with Jaleel White or is there another film coming out?

    For those that missed it;

It would have been better if Wilford Brimley was cast as Dr. Robotnik.

Another film; this one is official. See this source for more information.

Multiple sources have reported at 6PM ET that Sony will be releasing a Sonic movie. No release date is known.

Neal H. Moritz, most recently of 22 Jump Street, will be producer. Toby Ascher will be executive producer.

The production will be a hybrid of live action and CG. Sega-Sammy owned Marza Animation Planet will have a key role in the latter. A report from Deadline.com appears to indicate this could be a series of films, and not just one:

"The plan is to release one movie per year. Pic will focus on Sonic’s rivalry with characters from the vidgame, including his evil nemesis Dr. Eggman. Sonic uses his stature as world’s fastest hedgehog to move at supersonic speed to protect his friends from their enemies."

Additional reporting from The Hollywood Reporter indicates Upright Citizens Brigade alums Evan Susser and Van Robichaux are writing the initial screenplay.

In December, we first reported on the registration of several Sonic movie domains by Sony Pictures, though they didn’t go anywhere at the time. Today’s release indicates those domains were indeed registered ahead of time for that purpose.

Well this is going to suck. Looking through everything he's ever worked on, there's not one thing I've enjoyed.

I wonder if this is mainly geared towards Sony's PSN? Similar to Microsoft funding the Atari landfill documentary that will air on Xbox.
