SNES AC adapter question
Hello guys, I recently acquired a SNES mini. The owner sadly, made some modifications to it, and now it uses a SEGA AC adapter, instead of the regular SNES one. My question is, is this a good thing to do? Or will my console die unexpectedly one of these days? Or will it be fried the minute I attempt to use it??
Assuming that guy made the mod properly, yes it is a good thing, mainly because of how EASY the SNES AC jack port (when you connect the AC adapter) tends to break, and many SNES had them broke already.Originally Posted by clicsmodernos

It was probably 'modded' because it was broken or damaged... unless it was cheap I would just return it and buy a working snes in nice condition.
I would disagree with the 'mod' being a good thing.
Agreed the mod is not a good thing, it's a chopped system. I've never had a problem with the AC port on the systems I've gone through over the years when they've fell into my hands. Then again I tend to just plug something in and leave it alone as they're not really made for poking away at daily.
It was traded for a Nintendo 64 I had lying around. And the only reason I wanted it was because my SNES has an issue with the video output so the image looks terrible.
Well, the console works, so I guess the only thing to do is use it until it breaks, right?
I guess thats not bad, I was afraid you paid like 50-70$ for it on ebay. Yeah run that bastard into the ground!
Or if youre good at soldering take the good AC port off the bitchy SNES and its plastic shell and swap that to the good board on the other. Get the best parts of both and make a solid system without frankenbits.
There's nothing wrong with it,it just now uses the same ac port as a super famicom,plus your not stuck to just using a snes psu.
Also you can't just desolder the ac port as it's part of the back plastic,you would have to find a back piece with a good ac port on it and since it's a snes 2 it wont be a easy find.
I have to agree that there's nothing wrong with it, keep it and use it until it stops working. Unless it gets excessively hot which I highly doubt I don't see any issues.

And to the person who said I am now using a SFC one, I shall remind you I'm using this awful Mega Drive 2 knock off one. It's hard finding original PSUs in Venezuela, so what should I be looking for? Super Famicom and Mega Drive 2 or is there any other option?
A model one sega genesis model 1 or a master system psu will work just fine on your system but as long as the psu your using now doesn't create any interference then you should be fine just using that.
The mod looks fine to me, only thing I would do is add the 1000uF 25V bypass cap onto the pcb. You can see the empty silkscreen behind the input jack. Aftermarket power adapters are known for less than stellar construction and it never hurts to have another layer of power conditioning.

it seems to be a pretty legit replacement, I didn't notice any scratches or any thing on the top of the PCB and it fits the area well.
as for ac adaptor replacements either genesis/megadrive model 1 or super famicom. they are both rated about the same, first party wont be made out of Chinese solder turds either
and +1 to that cap, infact if your old snes had a video problem pop it open and check it out and see if you can add one to it aswell
