Interesting, but still given what we know entry into is wasnt based on true talent which is a shame. Maybe that story we were presented will give the guy with the #2 spot there who beat out many other stores #1s a shot at a win in all fairness?
By the way going by that other thread about annoyances that get people. What the f is wrong with those people who were listed? Why must everyone have some douchy little callsign instead of their real name at a participant?? It comes off as just so childish and unprofessional. I get it as an account name on NNid, PSN, steam, whatever, but in person use your damn name...sheesh.
I think its pretty cool they invited Cosmo, Bananas, Essentia, and Trihex. All of them are really good and well known speedrunners.
Trihex is one of the best Yoshi's Island players in the world, Ive seen him speedrun it and he is insanely good.
They are speedrunners with large fan bases, and they have had those names for years. All speedrunners/streamers do it.

I get that (now) but I still believe that idiotic internet nicknames need to stay online is all. This isnt just some special case because it is Nintendo.
Also are these semi pros playing against the contest winners at the few local locations? Seems like an attempt to stack the deck with those who didnt earn the spot, but got it from internet fame.
I won the chicago regional with a score of 2.98 million. I believe I am the oldest competitor in the field and likely the only person who participated in the 1990 NWC. I hope to represent 'team old guy' well.
chrisbid, you should tell them that you were in the original NWC back in 1990. You might get a special mention/shout-out on-stage if you do. Who knows, they might call you Mr. Old Skool. If they do, quote Coach Z and tell them that you are so old school, they tore the school down.
(A listing of the games played appears after the video, so if you want to avoid spoilers, don't scroll too far down or just go full-screen.)
And now our feature presentation...
The games played in the championship were

Splatoon
Legend of Zelda
Blast Ball (new game like soccer with guns and mechs)
Super Metroid
Mario Kart 8
Balloon Fight
Super Smash Bros. for Wii U
Super Mario Maker
I must say that I really enjoyed watching that video. It was really fun and there were definitely some surprises. Good show all around.
Yeah, this was really good. I'm surprised at the production value and how organized it was. I've been talking about Super Mario Maker for awhile now but damn do I want this game even more.
Yeah, Mario Maker looks awesome.
I watched the event yesterday and it was really fun to watch.
The commentators are all morons and everything they said was stupid. That little kid in the beginning was hilarious, he wouldnt shut up. Nintendo quickly got rid of him after splatoon.
Nintendo has it on Youtube so I watched the Nintendo World Championships just now and it was entertaining, but like I said. The Nintendo World Championships is pretty much a bunch of gamers that are worse than you. The person who won was atleast the better of the two in Mario, so I'd say he's not really a bad player, but a lot of what we saw was pretty embarrassing(watching the people play through the end of Super Metroid for example.)
Did anyone catch Reggie vs some guy? Wow, Reggie is atrocious in Smash. He's worse than me. At least I know how to super jump when your falling off.
I honestly couldn't tell if he threw the match or if he was that bad. But like he said, he spends 16 hours a day running a company, not playing Smash.
No, I'm pretty sure he is that bad. If nothing else, the guy he was playing against was the winner of last year's Nintendo Smash tournament, so he is super skilled at that game. Besides, Reggie playing SSB4 was a method to promote the Street Fighter Ryu DLC for Smash and to be silly rather than to have a real bout. (Tee hee hee, I gotta sneak in an SNK Real Bout reference there. My day is now complete. )
It's too long, but I watched the closing battle between the last two and that one geek was just mauled by the other guy badly. It was fun seeing the creativity of the fun house making some wacked out just messed up stages in Mario Maker. It shows that as obtuse and stubborn as the Japanese branch is, that the US one (leadership aside) really does pay attention to the fans and the underground stuff. Mario Maker is basically a big wet kiss to all the fans who make, do their own, or buy someone elses pre-made hacks for existing carts you find all over the place online. So so many of them dig into the SMB lineage of the NES/SNES doing some insane stuff and I could see that insanity in some of those designs.
I was going to watch then I saw how long it was. Is there going to be any special collectible stuff out of this? As long as people had fun it was worth it I suppose. Some history there to which is huge for Nintendo
