    Smile Favorite Freeware

What are some of your freeware favorites?

To clarify, this means games where there is no charging for the game, DLC, in-game items, add-ons, etc., and no alternative business models in action such as in-app advertisements, pre-app advertisements, user tracking, app usage surveillance, reporting, etc. Sad that we need a disclaimer like that these days.

    I'll get us started.

I really like IceBreaker. It is similar to Jezzball and Qix. IceBreaker features fast and fun arcade-esque action! And even better than freeware, it is also Free Software (free and open source). It's available for Linux and Windows.

I also quite like Spinvaders. It is similar to Space Invaders but with excellent, modern music, sounds, and graphics... plus with each successful shot, your multiplier goes up, and once you get to 10x multiplier, your shots are upgraded to high-speed, shrapnel-throwing missiles! And once again, it is also better than freeware as it is also Free Software. Spinvaders is available for Linux, Mac, and Windows.

So I ask: What are some of your favorite freewares?

Rogue. fricking ROGUE. As in the game that invented the term "Roguelike." I would almost say Nethack just for all the silly ways you can die (one time I basically enacted a Looney Tunes episode), but Rogue feels more fun somehow.

Thanks to ADG I've been getting into the Kingdom of Kroz series. It at first looks like a Rogue-style game but its actually action-based.

remember Xargon? IE the Jill of the Jungle-like platformer? It's freeware.

    I love Tyrian 2000.

Ultima IV.... best RPG ever, possibly.

Man... so much to choose from.

Well I've always loved in building sims nothing more than the original Sim City. Thanks to that One Laptop per child thing years ago, Maxis released the source as freeware to compile just not to sell for any format. There is a WIndows release that is Java based, but I just found the Microsoft Store has a copy of it too you can install as an app in windows 8/10 too (probably works on 7 don't see why not.) It's called Micropolis since EA owns the Sim City name.

The last time I went after this I could easily find the download with googling, now it's amazingly vanished, probably MS had a hand in that (grr.) If someone wants the actual install I can share the zip.

Another is the Wonderboy 3 remake, Dragon's Trap for windows.
http://www.smspower.org/forums/10266...TheDragonsTrap Yes that's a forum, towards the very bottom is the installer and a 64bit exec from the maker if you need that.

A third and I'll quit here -- The Ur Quan Masters -- freeware of Star Control 2.

Further development on The Ur-Quan Masters has resulted in The Ur-Quan Masters HD.

I may never get around to playing that at this rate.

By the way, has anyone here tried Cart Life? It won some big awards, but seems pretty obscure.

    Liero - Essentially... realtime Worms.

Developer lost the sourcecode in a hdd crash, but clone projects that replicate Liero have sprung up from the ashes. Great game.

Cool I remember Liero. That was fun when you couldn't get Worms or at least cheap Worms for quite awhile.

I have to throw this one out there because it's on ever frigging format around even Android.
    http://sourceforge.net/projects/freeciv/ (general project/downloads)
    https://play.google.com/store/apps/d....freeciv&hl=en (Android/Googleplay)
https://play.freeciv.org/ <-- Never heard of this, but browser play

If anyone were still in the dark with this, plays with the CIV2 ruleset, has CIV1 built in (my thing) which you can switch to.

This isn't exactly freeware I think, but Blizzard put them up for free which is just as nice. You have to just have a free battle.net account to get these goodies. I made a thread during August about them.
    https://us.battle.net/account/download/

    Blackthorne (Windows game/installer)
The Lost Vikings (DOS, DOSBoxed custom install, just works great without hassle)
Rock n Roll Racing (SNES, ZSNESWin custom install, just works, no be here either)

I know this is a terrible cheat, but...and this is an IF the wikipedia is correct. Here's a so called list of commercial video games released as freeware (good size too.)
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_o...ed_as_freeware

Some notables I remember -- Alien Carnage (aka Halloween Harry), BC Racers, Command & Conquer (and Red Alert along with Tiberian Sun), Defender of the Crown (multi format and other Cinemaware games too), Mechwarrior 4, Major Stryker (and other apogee dos games), Railroad Tycoon Deluxe, Skyroads, Tyrian, Ultima 4 (and through GOG) Ultima Worlds of Adventure 2, Wolfenstein3D, and Wild Metal Country (part of a Rockstar Classics with GTA1 and 2.)

There's some fine games outside of the computer format too for Amiga (Bonk as BC Kid and Rtype) and stuff for the Megadrive/Genesis, and more on that list.
