Default Limited Run Games (producing physical copies of digital games)

I'm surprised no one else here is bringing up these guys. Seems right up our alley between the collectability of a physical copy + the rarity of a tiny print run (even smaller than much ballyhooed rarity of Gaijinworks' releases). Here's some info:

    http://www.hardcoregamer.com/2015/10...any-name-says/

I can't say I had even heard of the games they're starting off with, and I can't say they sound or look that great either (Breach & Clear has pretty lousy reviews). But it's still an interesting prospect. Considering the low print runs and fairly low price for the games, I might nab them anyway, just to give them a shot. Or least for any Vita games they release, since I like the platform and it gets so few physical releases as it is. I hear Breach & Clear is at least improved from the digital release, so perhaps it's now not as bad as the reviews make it out to be.

If they can actually manage to keep this business going, I hope they can advance beyond C-tier indie games. I'd especially love to see some Japanese games, but they don't localize and I kinda doubt the publishers who have localized Japanese games for digital-only releases would hand over their IPs. But there is some nice stuff coming out on Vita digitally that could sorely use a physical copy.

    EDIT:

Since Limited Run Games has been in business for a while now, I thought it would be worthwhile to create a master list of their catalog.

For the time being, all releases have their print runs split in half on the day of release, with the first half available at 10 AM EST, and the second half available at 6 PM EST. A minimal stock of canceled orders is also made available at a later date. Order limits are generally one, sometimes two, per game (or one per platform if the game is available on multiple platforms).

I don't have a PS4 or Vita so whatever they start with won't really interest me but I agree that the concept holds potential, especially if they release stuff like the example of Marvel Vs Capcom 2 because games like that always disappear after awhile due to rights expiring. Maybe in the future they could even do some print runs of imports that never came here such as Metal Wolf Chaos or some of the Fire Pro Wrestling titles. I'll have to keep my eye on this.

Is this different from Indie Box?

Never heard of Indie Box before, but that's cool what they're doing too. That's limited to computer games, though, and it sounds like they're just throwing them on a flash drive. Limited Run Games is doing console/handheld games (so far just Vita and PS4), using the same medium as any regular retail release on those platforms.

It still is similar to Indiebox. I have one for Steamworld Dig and it's very nice. Yes the game comes on a HID(security card) sized flat card that flips a thin USB plug out to install the game with (and there's a steam code) but it's all physical still.

Shame that company appears to make some truly crappy games, hopefully they got something good coming up as noted that Breach game got bad reviews.

Remember fangamer did this too and for Sony as well which goes to show how easy going and lax Sony is about publishing low rent digital games as physical for the market -- Retro City Rampage DX for both PS4(I have it) and Vita (don't) which came some months after. They're limited I think to 2-4K copies so even a smaller run than these guys stuff. Also there have been others too with Teslagrad, Pure Pool, Pure Chess, Pinball Arcade, Plants vs Zombies 2, Stick it to the Man, Shovel Knight (multi-format) and the too delayed upcoming MIghty 09 (also multi-format.)

The games that they're getting publishing rights so far are crap. Would be nice to get a retail release of some of the better indie games. I'll list off just ones I've played, I'd purchase Spelunky or a Zeboyd Games RPG compilation.

It's a process. They are releasing games they have ready access to first and they have extended an offer to many other indie publishers to release their games on physical media. If the first two releases sell out, they are planning on releasing many more PS4 and Vita indie games and we should hopefully get some really good ones.

They didn't acquire the publishing rights to their first releases since they already owned those IPs themselves. Limited Run Games is a subsidiary of Mighty Rabbit Studios, who developed their first two releases. It's a shame that they themselves aren't known for creating great games, but if they can publish better titles from other developers down the road, it's all good. They just have to first prove that they're capable of successfully manufacturing and selling physical copies of games. And I suspect it'll go decently well for them since, even if the games stink, there are always collectors who want a rarity and scalpers who think they can make a buck off of rare games. I wouldn't be surprised if a large percentage of the copies bought will remain sealed. Which is kind of silly if the people buying end up playing the games digitally anyway because they don't want to open their sealed copy, but whatever floats anyone's boat. I'd be opening mine.

Anyway, speaking of Zeboyd, there are rumors that the third Limited Run Games release will be Cosmic Star Heroine, but I'd take that with a huge grain of salt for now.

They're already sold out. But luckily there's a DOS version available on floppy disks now.

We are in talks with other developers and once we prove ourselves with this launch, we will be releasing bigger titles!

Wow a newly developer MSDOS game on a 3.5" floppy. That's insane, got to give them all the credit in the world for that and Linux too.

LimitedRunGames -- nice to see a developer pop up on here, glad you joined. I do hope you're right and those talks and sales pan out because if you can score some high quality stuff to publish in such a fashion if it's appealing to me and on a system I own I'd buy a physical release 100% of the time over a digital rental copy.

On Zeboyd Games Kickstarter for Cosmic Star Heroine, one of the tiers are to get the entire series from their collection, and with the game being released on PS4 does that mean they're putting their other games also on PS4? I own them on PC but would like to own a physical version of the games on console. Then they can get additional digital sales. Hopefully with a PS4 port they'd fix the score mode on Cthulu Saves the World(doesn't work on PC.) Would purchase a compilation with Breath of Death 7, Cthulu Saves the World, Penny Arcade 3, and Penny Arcade 4 on one disc for $50. $60 with all games plus Cosmic Star Heroine. Would buy Spelunky, Rogue Legacy, and Fez. If you're taking suggestions those are some of mine.

Breath of Death 7...that reminds me of something I'd pay up for too -- Dragon Fantasy 1 and 2. Great game, wish it wasn't trapped on my mobile as a non-owned game.

Thanks! Yeah we are pretty optimistic about being successful. A lot of people are interested in physical copies for games.

Well my take in it is both I guess my age, but I also believe that if I pay for something I should be allowed to actually own it and therefore control it. I own a Kindle too and I've seen what happened in the past with them where they lost the right to have 1984 the book, and they got sued and lost over it when they stole everyones copy when they lost the rights to sell it, so they pulled it, and through wifi erased it off peoples kindles! Nintendo/Konami much did the same on Wii too when they lost the rights to TMNT (Turtles) and pulled that stuff when Ubisoft grabbed the license. There's enough even if it's few precedents of games being bought, used, then stolen by the distributor for one lame ass reason or another stealing peoples money and game away. They smile and don't care because they have EULA fine print that states it's on their terms, you get a license, you own nothing, and it's basically a short term digital rental they can revoke. I had it done to myself once before too as Sony released a mobile version of Loco Roco and this was years ago but my phone choked and I got a new one, when I went back to download my stuff I couldn't find it. I called the mobile company and they said SOny pulled it and blocked current owner downloads and apologized like mad that it was gone for good and their hands were tied -- I was furious.

I won't pay more than $5 pretty much for any download because of that as it's crap. I still buy physical CDs and Blu-Rays too. I even own Retro City Rampage DX for PS4 on disc as I got in on that before they were snapped up by greedy flippers for over $100/ea on ebay.

Is there a chance your company is in talks for releasing games for Microsoft's or Nintendo's systems or will this be a mainly Sony partnership for the foreseeable future?

There is a chance we may do Nintendo, but Microsoft is hard to work with this generation.
