Default is there still a way to play Phantasy Star Online _multiplayer_?

So yesterday, I took a chance on Phantasy Star Online for the Dreamcast. So far I'm like "this is okay, but I bet it really must've been a good co-op experience."

Then I got to wondering if there's a version of the game--Gamecube, PC, or even a way to hack the original Dreamcast version--to still be playable. Not just via a modem, but also if I could somehow network multiple consoles together and play in a group among friends.

So what are your options for PSO-cooperative experiences these days? Or is it strictly a singleplayer game now?

Yeah, there's a pretty huge DC community with several fan hosted servers. If you do a quick Google search, you'll hit a bunch. There are still several for most of the DC online games like Quake and Alien Front as well. The DC game also supports split-screen couch multi-player.

So how, exactly, does one connect to the interwebs with the Dreamcast?

I would imagine you have to setup your IP settings and that funk you see in your router settings on the DC internally in the settings, then there probably are some custom figures to put in instead since Sega is dead and others are hosting the games so you can drop right into them.

I looked into this last year. While there is a still active PSO Dreamcast community if you want to do the legwork, it pretty much requires the Dreamcase broadband adaptor, which is hella uncommon and costs a good chunk of change off eBay.

There is a PC version that also has fan support to keep it active. Getting that up and running takes a few steps, do a google search for 'PSO PC Online', and you should find a set up guide and software you need.

Is the GameCube broadband adapter easier to find? Maybe he can do it that way. Plus, better graphics and added missions.

I got rid of my Gamecube Broadband adapter over a month ago. I never used it.

I can't imagine there being much of a Gamecube community supporting PSO. PSO Ver. 2 and PSO III are the only online games I know of, that had online play with the console. Mario Kart was just LAN.

    This one looks pretty dead.

Although, networking a bunch of Gamecubes together in a house somewhere still sounds pretty fun, so LAN-only play might be cool.

I think I would much prefer just _saying_ "Dude, kill this wolf on my ass!_ than having to type it under pressure.

    You could play split-screen.

I own Phantasy Star Online for Dreamcast and Gamecube. Dreamcast doesn't include splitscreen while Gamecube does. Gamecube also includes episode 2 so it's the best version on consoles.

Also why not just invite a bunch of friends over and download the PC version of PSO Blue Burst and use one of the private servers? You'll all have to connect online since I think PSO was online only anyways, so no lan, but you can still all connect online even in the same home and play together from there. It includes episodes 1, 2, and 4(episode 3 is a card game.) On the PC version you can also use 10 different hot keys for spells on the keyboard while using a controller as well, making you a "Force" to be reckoned with.
Everything in the above post is opinion unless stated otherwise.
