    Default Week 2

All week one scores are recorded in my handy dandy notebook. On to week 2!

-Space Invaders Extreme (DS, PSP, Download services)

-Story/arcade mode in any version of Puyo Puyo, including the Nazo Puyo games, Kirby's Avalanche, and Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine.

-Player's Choice: any game that has Ryu from Street Fighter in it.

-Three more weeks for an Ogre-series game for RPG points. Have you liberated a town today?

Exclamation All week one scores are recorded in my handy dandy notebook.

I get a big fat zero for the first week.

I waited till the very last minute to play my super game (Super Stardust HD) only to discover my Dual Shock 3 was dead. I didn't find another one until after midnight. I got screwed on BOTH games because of controller issues. If I were smarter and not a procrastinator I would have just ran through any number of the multiple versions of Super Street Fighter II I own just for a cheap point, but I'd had a really stressful week and didn't have much focus. Which is exactly why I SHOULD be playing more games.

    Default Pocket Fighter (Saturn import)

I hadn't played Pocket Fighter in probably 15 years. I almost forgot how charming this game was. Fortunately, beating the solo game is still cake.

Sadly all my teenage friends who used to like this game are long since gone, and I doubt I'll ever meet any locals who would care about this classic retro fighter.

I was actually hoping someone would play Pocket Fighter or Puzzle Fighter. Nobody seems to remember Pocket Fighter these days, but it's fun as hell, and excellent for some versus play.

    Default Puyo Pop Fever (Gamecube)

After spending an aggravating hour trying to figure out why I didn't have any sound, and fighting with a tangle of a hundred wires, I dusted off the Wii and completed two of the three single player modes in Puyo Pop Fever. I haven't played this game since the year it released. I forgot that it had annoying 3D combo animations that I used to turn off in the options menu. Something I rectified in my second play through.

I have the DS verion of Space Invaders Extreme. I thought that I also had the PSP version as well. I know I physically picked it up and held it in Walmart or Kmart some years ago. I must have passed on it figuring it was more or less the same game on a different platform. I suppose this challenge is as good a reason as any to finally unseal it. It's not a rare or expensive game after all.

Managed to 1CC Street Fighter II: The World Warrior with Ken on the PSP version of Capcom Classics Collection. This one is just a straight port of the PSOne Street Fighter Collection with no changes at all. It still has the load screens but they're at a minimum since I have the game copied to a memory stick. I usually hate playing PSP fighters but WW's slow speed coupled with very lenient special inputs make this port a bit more playable (to me) than straight CPS emulation.

I'm not used to playing as Ken that much, but using him is a perfect way to see how much changed from WW to CE/HF. His hurricaine kick redizzies almost every single time so if you hit it once on an opponent the round is pretty much over. As an example of small changes being huge just try to use Ken on the car bashing bonus stage in WW. His close f+HK axe kick move still hits twice, but nowhere in the same points engrained in your mind, so you can't just spam f+HK to destroy the car.

I'm working on the Psp version. Made it to the 4th level. How many levels are there?

I've only done the DS version, though I have done at length. There are 5 stages in that one.

I'll try it out today. I figured there were like a few hundred stages or something. Seems like it would be that sort of game. If it's not insanely long then I'll have a crack at it.

I discovered that I didn't have the Vice game for NES either, so I've just been dedicating all my gaming time to Muramasa: The Demon Blade. I really, REALLY enjoy this game! It's just flat out gorgeous.

I really love the landscapes and the dialog, the voice acting, and the combat system, however, truth be told I sort of suck at the combat, because I'm just AWFUL at those little challenge sections through our the game that arr in the trees locked behind the magic barriers, where you have to defeat 100 enemies each in. Even when I'm several levels above the level they suggest you be at before taking them on I still get my ass handed to me.

I think I've only beaten one of them, which was the 100 ninjas one in the 5th or 6th region.

Glad you're digging it! Odin Sphere is extremely similiar, so if you have that one, it's a great game with Norse mythological overtones. Dragon's Crown is my personal favorite, but that has a lot to do with how hard I love a good beat 'em up, and it has ridiculously fun co-op.

To round out this week I played through the import alternative "Hebereke Popitto"(Super Famicon). It was a pretty standard Dr.Mario style puzzle game but was a nice change of pace from the many platformers I've been playing. Overall the game was pretty fun; granted the last two stages were a little annoying in that it was easy to make a mistake at the beginning due to an unexpected enemy move and end up with little to no chance of completion because of it.

Out of curiosity, if you complete the import alternative instead of one of the games, do you still get the bonus points for completing all 3 games in the week?

Yes. The import alternate stands in for a game, allowing the bonus point for a three game sweep, but letting you skip something you'd rather not play or just try something new.

    Default Week 14

After some more new players scored some wins, it's a new week AND month. New games all around, and new scoreboard up tomorrow!

    Week 14 games:

    -Silent Bomber (PS1)

-Super Spike V'ball (World Championship) (NES, Arcade)

-Player's choice: pick any game based on a movie that had a theatrical release somewhere in the world. Examples might include Street Fighter: The Movie, Disney's Hercules, Goldeneye 007, Enter the Matrix, Darkman, The Untouchables, etc.

    -Import alternative: Cyberbots (Saturn, Arcade)

-April RPG: Pick any game from the Lunar series. These include Lunar: The Silver Star (and its ridiculous number of remakes), Lunar 2: Eternal Blue (and its remakes), Lunar Magic/Walking School, and Lunar Dragon Song (ouch).

    Good luck, and happy Wrestlemania!

Default Week 13 Player's Choice Completed - Alex Kidd and The Lost Stars

I completed Alex Kidd and the Lost Stars and realized it's another Master System game with wonky sound on the Retron 5. Not terrible like Fantasy Zone II, but definitely different.

Anyway, I didn't get to play Astal until around 1:00 am, and after 2 defeats (got to the stupid tangle boss that freezes Astal, then died on the Plains of Destiny the next game) I think I'll retire for a few hours and go at it again in the morning. I knew that I wouldn't breeze through Astal after so many years, but I sure enjoyed picking this title up again. It's such a gorgeous game. Anyone who's a fan of The Never Ending Story, and/or The Dark Crystal should enjoy this game.

Do games that aren't directly based on a specific movie but based on a film series count? For example Alien Isolation, Mad Max, Force unleashed?
