Default Tips for a beginning SNES collector?

I'm tossing around the idea in my head of starting an SNES collection, and I'm thinking of using the "rare stuff first" method. So, what games should I be looking for? Here's my list so far:

    Mega Man X3
    Dracula X
    Bebe's Kids
    All Rayasystems games
    All Kaneko games
    All Renovation games
    Super 3D Noah's Ark
    Peace Keepers
    Mountain Bike Rally
    Snow White
Musya: Classic Japanese Tale of Horror
    Wizard of Oz
    Ninja Gaiden Trilogy
    Final Fantasy 2
    Secret of Mana
    Lufia 2
    Breath of Fire 2

I'd modify your method to include all of the RPGs too. They aren't rare by any means, but realistically you'll end up spending just as much on them if not more.

I have Chrono Trigger and EarthBound, and those are the most expensive ones, I believe. FF2 and Secret of Mana are pretty high up there, though, right? And perhaps Breath of Fire 2 and Lufia 2 as well.

I would add the Ninja Gaiden Trilogy to the list. Hard to find and expensive on ebay.

I'd disagree with setting out to get stuff just because it's rare first.

You should be setting out to start your collection with games which you actually like and want to play, otherwise you're totally losing out on the main aspect of collecting for this (or indeed any other) system.

Granted, it's good to pick up the rare stuff when possible and personally I even split my budget to do so.. but in the end it's my collection, I'm not building it to show off how many rares I have, I'm collecting it for myself and so that I can enjoy it. I've got a fair few rare games, but in all honesty most of the main rares are rare for a reason, they're either average or they just plain suck so very few were made and/or bought, there are far fewer which are actually enjoyable to play (although it is a nice surprise when you find them).

IMO, build up a modest selection of games you like before you seriously start considering running after the rares, sure if you see one and can fit it into your budget or think it'll take a LONG time to come round again (they always do) then go for it, otherwise stick to what you like and want to play, then once you've got a good selection of games you enjoy you can set about using a strategy like that, otherwise you're taking most of the fun out of it.

Sometimes it even works out that the games you want to play are also rares.. two birds, one stone

I agree with you, NvrMore, but I've already covered that base.

Well in that case go for whatever strategy suits you, although you've got to define the difference between rare and expensive, they don't generally go hand in hand with each other.

If you're really going with a rare priority tactic, you'll need to ba able to recognise the difference when buying on a budget.

    e.g. from your list

Final Fantasy 2: It's expensive but not tremendously rare. It's price is high largely because of it's name, developer and popularity.

Snow White: Genuinley rare, doesn't come round much and price probably won't go anywhere near as high as FF2 because it's nowhere near as popular.

If it came up to a toss up between the two (your budget won't permit both) then you should go for Snow White, simply because FF2 will come round again a lot more often than Snow White and will generally always be available to you at some point.

well, i would agree with that if we werent talking about the snes though.
Snes has alot of expensive games, but they arent really rare, but they are very good, almost every single one of these expensive carts, pretty much every RPG for snes totally rocks (if your into rpgs)
and they all fetch a price...
I wouldnt say to collect rares nessisarily first, but i would collect games you wanna play, which probobly consists of the more expensive games (Ogre battle, FF's, Chrono Trigger, The Lufia's, Breath of Fires..and many many more)
    Just how i see it.

    Any RPG:
    FF2
    FF3
Breath of Fire 2 and one
    Secret of Mana
    Chrono Trigger.

games like that arent rare. its just that they're in very high demand. and people will pay tons for a game like that.
If you want a good list, go pick up the new issue of tips and tricks, with the collectors closet on SNES soon to be rare games. (Hey, it was written by joe.)
Somebody once told me to get a life.

I told them I sold it for money to buy video games.

And therefore, I added those RPGs to my list.

If u are going for a full collection I would just get any game u do not have and look around at a garage sale of something for the rare ones but if u are going for boxes and everything then u have to look more for rares.

I think you can still buy Super 3D Noah's Ark brand new from wisdom tree. Or so their website says, for 49.95.

    http://www.christianlink.com/media/wisdom/super/

In fact, pokng around there, and on another subject, many of their Nintendo and Genesis games are on sale.
