Cool. I've been thinking of doing this as well since my kid accidentally snapped my SP in half a few months ago
I used to install afterburner kits but would much rather have a backlight. I'm in the same position as you though, it's hard to find the time.

When the GBA came out I was shocked it didnt have a lit screen. I remember trying to figure out why the Game Gear had a light and it was on old system. I figured Nintendo just wanted to milk people for all they were worth and they were slowly adding new features

Very nice! I'm pretty happy with my backlit SP, but my husband has been wanting to do something like this. But I too don't want to hack up my original GBA, since it's in perfect shape with all the original packaging, so I should pick up a spare original GBA sometime.
