Default Is there any value on keeping the boxes for newer consoles?

Just wondering what others think about this. Been pondering throwing away the console boxes for the Xbox 360, One, PS4, Switch, etc. I don't see them as something of value, unlike classic consoles. Plus I can make some much needed space around here.

    What does everyone think?

the market is too saturated with speculators for them to be worth anything in the future. recycle them

They'll still be worth something. Even now, they're worth at least $10-$20 each. Plenty of people buy modern consoles used without boxes and just buy the boxes separately to put on display. Personally I still remember NES boxes worth around $10 each with complete systems easily found for $30, now the boxes are expensive. I never thought N64 boxes would be worth what they are now.

Personally I found a limited Wii U system box that I've seen sold several times online for about $150 each, and this is just for the empty box. Eventually modern system boxes will get expensive too. Most get recycled by average users or eventually get damaged in some way.

yea its hard to speculate whats going to be valuable or not.
i dont see any harm in keeping them although if i buy a system without a box i dont go out of my way to find one for it, new or old

If you wish to re-sell the console, having the box and original packing materials will be much easier to sell. Shows the bidders you take care of your stuff, don't discard and treat it like junk.

No room for Wii and Xbox 360 boxes! No long slow display of obsolescence entombed. They will burn, like the heathen kings of old.

This. Sometime if you ever decide to sell a console, the box is added value to a collector. I just parted with my SNES (original box, styrofoam tray, manuals, etc.) and made a SHITLOAD more than I paid when I bought it new. Albeit I bought it at the end of its generation when they weren't as pricey but it was minty fresh new and everything was near perfect when I sold it. So, yeah, keep the box. It may add value when you sell.

They'll eventually become collector's items, although at a much slower rate than previous generations. People are aware these items could be valuable in the future now and are less likely to part with them. The days of someone selling their entire collection for pennies on the dollar are over, same with garage sale rarities and such. It takes a few seconds to look up how much a game or console is worth instantly now online. Give it around 10 years before current-gen consoles will be considered classic collector's items. Especially, considering the digital nature of future generations. Nostalgia is eternal.

I know it's not a popular opinion but I don't see 360, PS3, Xbone, PS4 and newer games ever seeing a massive resurgence in popularity. Discs and their packaging are a lot cheaper to make so there's just a ton of them out there for one thing, and secondly, who is gonna be nostalgiac for Call of Duty #11: Modern Cold Warfare Shadow Ops Special Edition. They flooded the market with these cookie cutter games that don't look any different now than what they did 10 years ago.

360 came out almost 16 years ago. No one looks back on games from 2005 and goes "oooh retro!!" but in 2001, people looked at 16 year old games and said that. there's just nothing vintage or old looking about games made in the last 15 years because the technology has plateaued for the most part

Limited Run Games is already doing great for years catering to that same market with physical releases. Maybe not COD but even then, one day all releases will be digital. Any physical gaming item will become a commodity. That day will not be tomorrow but collecting is always playing the long game. Check out what an original non-classics factory sealed Halo fetches on eBay these days. You'll be surprised. Or a brand new original print Luigi's Mansion. These used to be easily obtainable mass-produced games. You would think their prices would remain stagnant given that but it only keeps rising.

I knew that about 6th gen titles. Keeping games sealed didn't really take off en masse until 7th gen. Look at prices of A Link Between Worlds or Call of Duty 4. $40 and $20 NIB respectively. old games. their prices just havent gone anywhere because there are so many speculators

The 'Zelda: A Link Between Worlds" 3DS console goes for double its price at launch these days. Sure, there will always be titles like COD that might not take off but there will be plenty from the recent gens that will go up like The Last of Us. Especially once physical options are removed altogether from the equation in a generation or two.

Yes, the internet has made more people knowledgable than ever before and there are lots of speculators. But how many of those speculators truly have the feel of what will be rare or not? I'd say very few do any research (or play the games for that matter) past popular trends like PS5 or XBOX Series X hoarding. You would need a lifetime in the scene, readily playing games from start to finish, reading the magazines/online websites, interacting in communities, it goes on and on.

It's a time investment. Only someone who was truly passionate and loved the scene would know intrinsically what will be valuable or not. To even be part of this forum is a complete rarity in the grand scope of things when you think about it. I wouldn't underestimate marketplace demand for even common to uncommon titles in 10 years like Ratchet & Clank.

There are a lot more people interested in video games today than in the 90s. Imagine what the marketplace will look like 10-15 years from now barring some Atari ET cataclysmic event.

They'll become retro slower, but will eventually become retro.

retro doesn't always equate to desirable though.

They're still valuable now though, at least $10-$20 each. If he really wants to clear out some space he can at least get something for them now, instead of having to wait 20+ years. It just seems a waste to actually throw them away.

Are you going to want to look at it / display it, or do you want to resell it? Do you have the space to keep it?

If the answer to both of those is "yes", keep it. Otherwise, recycle it and don't look back.
