Default Montezuma's Revenge - 2022 for NES, 2023 for PC

I played the classic 1984 Montezuma's Revenge for DOS like 20 to 25 years ago while helping to fix a friend of the family's PC. The computer software - which stars Panama Joe (originally called Pedro before it was published by Parker Bros.) exploring for treasure inside of a ziggurat / tomb - was a surprisingly good game for an EGA platformer! Ergo I remember it well to this day.

The game originally launched for the Atari 8-bit computers, Atari 2600, Atari 5200, Apple II, ColecoVision, Commodore 64, IBM PC (first as a self-booting disk), and the ZX Spectrum.

It also got a PC & Game Boy & GB Color sequel called Montezuma's Return.

Well, it turns out that the series has been seeing a revival recently!

First, the original dev. blessed a super fan's remake of the original Montezuma's Revenge game for the NES, launching it as an official port. They kept to the NES specs. of the time (that being 1988, the year of the SEGA Master System's port - the SMS variant launched with improved graphics, sound, and additional content). To wit, they didn't use super large NES ROM sizes nor write only for emulators nor remake the game just for modern platform/s. Instead the game runs perfectly well with the original NES hardware, NES 2 (the toploader NES), the aftermarket clone consoles, and emulators. The game launched during 2022 with both a digital form and a cart form.

Second, by December 2023, they will also be re-launching Montezuma's Revenge for PC. True, the game is already available at Steam. However, this freshest variant is supposed to be the definitive edition of the game, with all of the content which was meant for the original SMS, PC platforms, et. al. You see, while the game was going to have this content back during the day - like mini-boss, sub-boss, mid-boss, and final boss fights - unfortunately the publisher, Parker Bros., cut all of that from the final game back during the day to save money.

The original dev., Robert Jaeger, is leading the project. This game will be the "hyper deluxe" edition with all of the cut content included and loads more to make the game at least several times the original size (by the number of rooms). The remake is called "Montezuma's Revenge 40th Anniversary Edition."

Did you play the original Montezuma's Revenge or the sequel, Montezuma's Return? Was this back during the day or during the intervening years? Will you be playing the NES port or the Anniversary Edition?

Revenge I have played countless times on Atari and Coleco, one of the best early 80's platform games. Rob Jaeger is super cool, got to meet him at Digital Press in Clifton years ago.

The NES port I wasn't enthralled with, it wasn't much of an upgrade from those inferior consoles. I doubt Nintendo would have approved a license on that one, and nobody would have bought it.
