So, wait a minute. Look at the two auctions here, and tell me...is one of these promo units a fake?

There are major differences in the internal packaging, and in the way each unit is stamped on the bottom. (One says "NOT FOR RESALE FOR PROMOTIONAL USE ONLY", the other only has part of that.)

Is something strange here? :/ Or am I just making too much out of this?

I think you're making too much of this. I looked closely, and there isn't enough differences to judge that one of the sets is fake.

'Kay. I don't know enough details about Atari stuff myself, so I figured I'd ask people who do know.

My main concern is in the packaging -- one set has the accessories packed in labeled white boxes, while the other has more believable corrugated cardboard spacers.

One other question, though. How common are these things? I would think that a promo set (of anything) isn't the most available item...though I wouldn't personally pay $300 for one, either.
