Adam,
Where do you find these things?
Yawn....Review copy, byte for byte identical to the released version.
Call me when someone finds a REAL Master System proto.
What are you talking about?
This is a "real" proto.

BTW the sticker reads

To me, it's not a REAL proto, unless the game code differs from the released version.
To date, the ONLY true SMS proto's found have been Pat Reilly Basketball (unreleased), and a beta for Wonderboy in Monster World.
Well I got this one straight from a game developer. I dunno if its different from the released or not. Still its not a demo cart so I'd call it a prototype.
Adam
How exactly does one know if the code is the same or not? The game may look anf play like the released version but the code may still be unfinished or different?
You would have to get the game dumped, then compare the questionable proto rom to the released version in a hex program. If any of the information differs, its a proto.
yep.
Is this actually done on all games that are accepted as protos or are most of them likely bullsh*t
Generally speaking any game produced prior to release date or produced on media which differs from the released version is considered to be a prototype by most collectors.
I would say that most protos which are sold are not dumped by their owners for comparison prior to sale. However the people that do pracitice this habit do it ALOT and dump hundreds of games for comparison. If the code is different it is more appealing to some collectors who look for this. Just because the code is the exact same as a released version does not make it "bullshit". That just means it is a "Final beta" or "Final version" prototype.
However, don't take that to mean that there aren't "bullshit" protos on ebay, just that this isn't one of them.

Please don't misunderstand me, I wasn't saying that your auction was bullshit. I was just wondering how a prototype is actually verified. But it does sound too easy to make a fake prototype if the only way to tell would be to dump the game. However, don't take that to mean that there aren't "bullshit" protos on ebay, just that this isn't one of them.
Dumping the ROM would tell you nothing as far if the prototype were genuine. In fact if someone is going to fake a proto it will have data which is either unreleased or different from released because those get more money. It takes alot of work to make a fake prototype. Most people won't go through the hassle for $40.00 they are looking for at least several hundred.
They only way to tell is by looking at the board itself. Even then things get tricky. It always best to buy from people you trust if you aren't sure.

I collect SMS as my main system (next to nes), and the only proto i really am interest in is Pat Reillys basketball.
Cool proto though. I shall think about it.
