there are DOZENS of RPGs for the nes! here's a few to get you started (off the top o' my pointy lil' head):
crystalis
princess tomato in the salad kingdom
ultima exodus
ultima
wizardry (1 & 2)
the bard's tale
star tropics 1 & 2
dungeon warrior I-IV
the magic of scheherezade
the legend of the ghost lion
and so forth and so on...that'll keep you busy for at LEAST a year, lol...
the dragon warriors are great if u call the zelda game a rpg they are good to.
I for one like Final Fantasy 1. Its not amazing, but its one of the top five on NES IMO.
The dragonwarriors are very good. DW1 is tied with or a bit lower then FF1, but still.

Holy freaking god. Someone else remembers Magic of Scherezade. You have no idea how happy that makes me. That game was so cool.
In addition, I just wanted to say .......I"m no longer a level zero! YES!
My fav's have always been
DW4
Bard's Tale
Wizardy 1
Startropics
Might & Magic
Fear your thoughts because they become your words
Fear your words because they become your actions
Fear your actions because they become your habits
Fear your habits because they become your character
Fear your character because it becomes your destiny
Therefore: Thinking and nurturing positive thoughts, at any point in your life, can change your destiny.
They are not traditional RPG's, but Shadowgate, Deja Vu, and Uninvited are some of my favorites on the NES.

oh yeah! i love that game! i never finished it, lol, so i'll have to start all over one day and groove on that cool multi-battle system again...
If you haven't played Princess Tomato, you really should. It's more like Shadowgate/Deja Vu/Uninvited (way different engine, but same idea) than an RPG, but really cool just the same. I love that game. If you like these 3, you will love Princess Tomato.
Old Man Corn, Dammit.

Uncharted Waters is another NES rpg that might interest you. Another title that comes to mind is Hydlide, although I'm not even sure if that's an rpg or not. There was also a D&D game, I forgot the title though.

I'm not a fan of RPG's in particular, but I did like Dragon Warrior I & II a fair amount. That's about all the "true" RPG's I've bothered to play for any length of time on the NES. They may not be obscure, but there is a reason for that.
