That is one big ass screen, besides the fact that no real dimensions are given, just consider the relative size of the controller buttons. I dunno about the directional pad, something tells me it won't be too responsive if they keep it like that, flush with the surface.
I am sorry but that looks like crap to me. They need to copy the GBA fliptop screen. If they are going to make it to where you can play movies it would be much easier for everyone to see. I am just not impressed by that design.

I'm just hoping for some real competition for the GBA. Consumers are the ultimate losers if it isn't.
Also, I'm in the minority I think in that I want a large colorful screen, batteries be damned.
D
Battery life is why the Gameboy has survived so long. If the PSP cannot get at least 5 hours of gaming on a single set of batteries (or whatever they will use), it may not do very well. I'm guessing with such a large screen, it will have a similar life to that of a PDA, but I have no idea how long those things last in terms of battery life.
<Evan_G> i keep my games in an inaccessable crate where i can't play them
Portability is important too. Would that thing even FIT in my pocket?

It looks like an Atari Lynx in a way

If they mimic one of the older versions of the iPod with the directional pad, it won't be so bad....I kinda like the touch sensor.
Immediately looking at it the first thing that came to mind is that its not
going to be comfortable to hold. And Sony shouldve went with a stick similar
to the one on the NGPC.

I see my fingers sliding all over that and me missing the buttons easily because they're basically part of the surface. I hate touch controls instead of buttons. Plus...how easy would it be to scratch that screen?

I like it , so of course it will be a success.

For what it's worth, here's my take on the thing:
It looks like the Tapwave Zodiac, and that's pretty cool. THe touch buttons could be really great if done well, just think, no more Sega Thumb! I'm not sure how they're going to want to make movies on the thing, but if I can't just rip a dvd or something to a disc, then forget it, total waste of money. I like the flip-screen idea, as it saves the screen from scratches, but it's not entirely necessary, as all of my NGP's are pretty scratch-free.
Some necessary titles:
A Metal Slug title
Cardfighter's Clash (new one, or a port)
Picture Puzzle
Pac Man
Robotron
Well they are using they're own media format so you probably won't be able to burn your own stuff. And as far as the movie thing goes, I think its a bunch of crap, if I want to watch movies on the PSP I'm going to have to re-buy stuff that I already have on DVD or VHS. I'd rather have them leave it out and keep the price down. Also a flip top would be nice to save the accidental scratches. Anyway, I'm not going to get upset over a mock up.Originally Posted by DrJustinRamone

Goddamn regional coding system...
Badass links, and If the PSP turns out to look like that, I would be happy, I kinda like the way it looks.
My first thought as well.Originally Posted by Achika
I think it looks nice, but the functionality will be the true test of the design. I've had discussions with some folks regarding the battery, and they'll be hurting if they can't improve the battery efficiency over 3 hours.
It's kinda like the "portable" PSOne: it's not portable if it has to be tethered to the wall via a power source. Those 3rd party batteries give 2 hours' play, and that just sucks.
Looks cool, but even if it's released late 2004 like they say, I still won't own the thing until at least a year later.
I'm stingy like that.

design is not the end all be all factor here, i mean look at the various gameboys, not until the GBA did they even come close to what gamers have asked for and it still has screen issues. price point and battery life count but the make or break is the games, many consoles have improved on the GB but none had the games. i think the harbinger of doom for a handheld is launching with a "sonic 2" title - gamegear, NGP, game.com, nomad, ngage i'm looking at you! if any company can pull the developer strings to bring a good crop of games to its handheld its gonna be market leader sony.
NEW ENGLAND CLASSIC GAMING-NEXT TRADEMEET pretty soon... IN BOSTON
Smooth and glossy portable = bad
The thing will get scuffed and scratched way too wasy.
I dislike the flush buttons, and I know its just a concept model, but they could have done a much better job rendering the screen.
Also, it looks like you would open the back of the console and insert a mini-cd type media. For it to be portable and durable, I think they will need to change to a cart based disc system (like a mini-disc).
I know it's a mock up, but damnit it looks like a dog tag. And that d-pad looks like malfunction waiting to happen.
I want this thing to do well, but I hope Sony isn't going to try to make this into a "jack of all trades" device. I don't want it to play movies, mp3s, make phone calls, etc. I just want it to play some games, hopefully games I'd actually want to buy and i'd like the whole damn thing to not cost me an arm and a leg.
Why is that too much to ask these days?
What will be really cool, is if they can come up with a new way to clearcoat it so that it is actually IMPERVIOUS to scratches, I'm talking drag it on the road while applying pressure and see it as good as new clearcoat.
Otherwise, I'm gonna have to agree, that's just scratches waiting to happen.
