Default Pirates! (NES) vs Pirates! Gold (Genesis)

Anyone played both versions of this game? I have the Genny version (but haven't played it) and I'm debating whether I should keep it or try to trade it for the NES version (my main collecting focus). Is the Genny version good enough that I should keep it to play on top of owning the NES version?

Being that Pirates! is my favorite game of all time, and I am also mainly an NES collector, maybe I can help. The Genesis version has better graphics and sound as one would expect, as well as a few cool things not present in the NES version (such as being able to actually walk around the town instead of navigating it through a menu, the 10 great pirate quests, a couple of pre-existing scenarios that you can choose to play instead of starting from scratch), but the NES version gets the nod from me for one reason: play control. The swordfighting in the Genesis version isn't as good or smooth as in the NES version. I just find the NES version slightly more fun to play because of this.

If you're an NES collector and don't care much about Genesis, then go for the NES version. However, if you really like the game, it's cool to own both versions. I even have the PC CD Rom game laying around somewhere too. I just can't get enough of Pirates!, it has unlimited replay value.

I have an extra Pirates! Gold for Genesis, if anyone else reading this topic is interested in it......

Scoots, you might want to hang on to the Genny version if at all possible. As far as I know it hasnt lost much of it's value since it was released... I bet it will go up.

he Genny version commands 25-30 maybe less. It isn't all that common, I know that. The Genny version has better graphics and a few added things as mentioned a few posts above. It does not, however, have the nice play control the NES version has. I would get all three, as they are great games.

I remember when I discovered Pirates at a cousins house. Needless to say, that was an all nighter.

The Genesis Pirates! GOld goes for $50-$60 complete.
I've sold 2 for that in the last month.

My fault. I thought he was talking about a loose copy. I always pick up games like that everytime I see them. i have this weird luck of always picking up Dracula X for the SNES. I find that one a lot.

I figured you were, I was just putting in my 2 cents about the value of a complete one.

If the story is correct, Sid is making a new version of Pirates for modern PC's. That should rock. This is one of my all time favorite games.

So what does a complete with box and map NES version go for?

I sold a complete NES Pirates! for $52 several months ago. Price might be different now.

    Default Bringing this back

This topic is three years old. However, I would like current opinions on this very topic.

I own Pirates for NES. I know Pirates Gold! for Genesis commands a fair price and I've never played it. Seeing that there haven't been new posts for this thread in 3 years, I am looking for some fresh opinions.

I consider Pirates on NES to be near perfect. I am extremely comfortable with the gameplay, control, graphics and the whole presentation. I was wondering if Pirates Gold! would be necessary since I am quite happy with the NES game and am a little turned off by the price of Pirates Gold!

Is the Genesis version necessary if you already own a similar game on NES?

By the way, I have two maps for NES Pirates but both are severely damaged. If anyone has an extra map, since neither of mine are intact, I'd love to hear from you.

Pirates! is best on C-64 and Pirates! Gold is best on CD32, imho.

This is a situation where I would definitely recommend emulation (before dropping $50 or so on an older game). There's also a version of Pirates Gold for the PC. The new version for the Xbox isn't bad either, although as someone else said my heart still belongs to the C64 version.

I would have to agree on the C64 version being the best. In my case, it's because of nostalgia. I still have my first run book style copy and my original disks play great. I wonder how much longer all my C64 disks will keep working

Heh. I guess I'm not alone. I was going to suggest the C64 version too. Get the NES one for your collection and the C64 one to play.

I assume the graphics and music is better on the Genesis. How about the gameplay? I appreciate the simple gameplay of "Pirates" for NES. Is the Genesis game the same or a great deal more involved/complicated?

The only version of Pirates Gold I've ever played is the PC version, and you can have my copy when you pry it from my cold, dead hands.

Going to pick up the Xbox version of Pirates this weekend. Hopefully I don't lose the same amount of time in it that I've lost to Pirates, Civilization, and the Total War games. Good god
