Default PS2 DVD Player -> Anger Management

Ok, I've worked at blockbuster for the past 2 and a half years, I've rented a lot of DVD's and I've never had one problem playing any of them in my PS2. Ever. I rented anger management last week and it didn't work... I got a different copy and it doesnt work, got another copy tonight and it doesnt work. The machine just refuses to read THIS movie.

Anyone else had any kind of trouble with this, or know why the hell it won't read?

Err, forgot to add. The system recognizes it as a DVD movie (and has with all copies of it), but when I select it, it acts like it's gonna work then it just says "Unable to read disc"

I can tell ya that the TRON DVD also doesn't work in the PS2. You have to keep in mind that its primary purpose is that of "game system". If it plays *some* DVDs, this is better than *no* DVDs. But still...

As I recall, we've discussed DVDs that weren't compatible witht he PS2 playback. Can anyone locate that thread? It was a somewhat small list, but there are others out there.

Anger Management played fine on my PS2. Maybe some are just more moody than others.

IGN has a running list of games not compatible with the PS2 and X-box. Look around. I'm pretty sure it's on their DVD page.

Tron plays fine for the first 40 minutes then it turns to a mass of green dots.

I don't own Anger Management but this isn't the first time I've heard it was a problem.

One common solution to these DVD incompatibility problems is often updating your DVD drivers on the PS2. While it may correct your issue, the downside is that you usually have to buy a new remote to GET the new drivers, and that even this isn't a foolproof method.

FWIW the new "+" Progressive Scan PS2' plays Tron without a problem. I don't have any other movies that didn't work on my older system, but if the Tron DVD is any indication, some things might have been fixed.
RIP bargora, you will be greatly missed. That is how we do things on Giedion Prime.

I second that. It's not so much that your PS2 is "moody," it's rather the version of the DVD player of the PS2. Earlier versions on early PS2s have much more problems reading DVDs than later versions. Sony corrected the problem and updated the DVD drivers.

Buying a new remote with an udate of the drivers is usually the solution. I have later versions on my two PS2s and never had a problem.

I never heard that early versions of the XBox showed similar problems.

I have the remote and updated drivers and there are a number of movies I've had issues with. Most notably and recently was the Special Features Disc of DareDevil (Who doesn't want to see Frank Miller ramble about how he remade a lame blind superhero into a lame blind superhero with angst over a dead girlfriend).
