    Default 50-60hz monitor question

I have a 21" monitor that is dying. I was going to just toss it but then I looked at it and though "you know, that would make a hella cool fish tank". I know monitors carry a lot of bigass capacitors and a lot of amperage even when off, though. How can I make sure that the thing is safe to gut before I go and try it?

once youve discharged the tube and are ready to disassemble it use a big screwdriver and a hammer do puncture it by inserting the screwdriver into the hole on the top of it (where the red cable used to be) and punch a hole in it carefully.. another way is to simply slam of the back of the CRT you will hear a small fuzzin noice once you breach and the tube starts to recompress with air..

    remember safety!
    Broken? fix it.

Wait a minute... Surely you aren't going to try and make a fishtank out of it? This is some strange form of hyperbole, is it not?

Why not a fishtank? It's not a form of hyperbole, I'm actually thinking of making a fishtank out of it.

You know... with all this recent talk of arcade monitors I was thinking that... you know... were gonna make a fishtank from the tube itself... aww jeez... nevermind... x_x

No, not the tube, the monitor casing. After taking some measurements, though, it turns out that while it seems like it would be cool, this particular monitor has weird dimensions that do not lend themselves well to something that needs to hold water. Water likes to be level, and the monitor case isn't enough of a cube. I'll have to get an old console TV or something and use that.

    Don't bother..

you'd be better off to go to a local TV repair place and pick up a broken old looking TV that would look much much better than a PC monitor!

Any RCA TV from the 70's has a lot more style than any monitor..
