I hope no one already posted this. I had it for a while, but I didn't have a link to it and at 18 megs, I didn't want to host it.

The 11 minute one is very impressive....
I have 8 videos, one of each level, of an amazing Japanese guy playing through SMB3 level by level.
I can host 1 video at a time on my school space so here:
http://www.personal.psu.edu/users/s/...0World%201.avi
I'll let it up for a day or two and upload the second one if people want to see it. I think it's really impressive.

I remember arguing with someone on this very board that you couldn't do it in under 20 minutes
That was amazing. Me and my buddies just sat there and said holy shit over and over again. I wish I could play any game that good. I was very impressed by that. I don't even think it is possible to get any better of a time than that.

Incredible feat, but I think he used a controller that had turbo functions. Sometimes he would shoot two fireballs in *extremely* rapid succession. Also, at a few points, he seemed to have mario put his arms out (max out P-meter) much sooner than it should have taken. It normally takes a screen length or more, but a few times he had a full P-meter after 1 second of running.
Another thing I noticed: many times he would squash a goomba while his jump was on the way up, instead of landing on it on the way down, which would propel his jump even farther. This requires incredibly precise timing (try it yourself).
Finally, he never fell through the white block in level 3, nor did he wait as long as I've always had to.
That video is very suspicious to me, especially in our internet/rom era. But if it is legit, then that is the single greatest video game achievement I have ever witnessed.
"And remember ladies: if it ain't tight, it ain't right!"
There are differences between the Japanese and the US version of the game. I used to know them back when I lived in Guam, but I wouldn't be surprised if some of those differences weren't related to the way he handled things.
Also, I pretty much just assumed that he used an emulator with save states to do such a thing. Even so, the fantastic control he has over mario and the timing involved are still incredibly impressive.
thats just sick.
does anyone have any good links to other crazy game runs, my appetite has just been wetted.

must... collect more.... 7800......help
One other fact is that is takes 50 fireballs to kill Bowser in the US version, but a lot less in the Japanese version (which he is playing).
There are a few things that look very suspicious..
for example, in the first 2 levels, he flies over the entire levels.. I wasn't aware that the P can last for that long! (Unless he using some kind of cheat - game genie or emulator cheat)
Also, with bowser, did you notice how fast the fight started?? doesn't bowser do some kind of talking, jumping around, or something before it starts??
Nope, that's pretty much how bowser's fight begins. Of course, players don't usually rush right at him
In the game the player is using a turbo function. What looks like about 15 fireballs is actually closer to around 36 fireballs fired in rapid succession.
while it is possible that the guy created a mock up of the game and then proceeded to intricately recreate every level and the Mario 3 physics by hand in an attempt to impress the internet, I kind of doubt it. You can't deny that the player's precision control over mario on even simple things like entering doors and jumping on single block steps without slowing down are impressive.
The thing that impressed me the most was his two jump grab of the leaf while he still had enough P power to instantly begin flying in the world 1 mini castle.
Yes,that is crazy.
I would like to shake his hand if he ever came out of his mom's basement.
But here is some I found looking at itthe other day:
At 9:33 a cannon ball hit him in the head, yet he gets points for it,when it hit him in the head...
And doesn't it hurt you when you touch Bowser?

My sentiments exactly. I mean, SMB3 was a great game back in the day, but...not really enough to make me want to sacrifice my life on its altar, y'know?
If it's real, of course - which I too doubt. Nobody's THAT perfect.

Hey, I saw this video on another board! Impressive... remarkable... incredible... though, I don't know if this one's as good as that Tetris video. But it's still amazing.

I have a video of Contra being beaten in 13 minutes. And a video of Mega Man 2 done really fast.

I can upload the contra one to my personal space if anyone is interested.... I still have the other 7 levels of Mario 3 bliss if anyone cares to see those too.
I would like to see the other levels of SMB3... as well as the contra one.Originally Posted by hades

I agree that he must have used some cheat (the P flying without a leaf or racoon suit being the proof), but it's also true that his precision is impressive. I guess that guy could still beat the game in an impressive amount of time (although definitely not that fast) if he played without cheats.
I didn't see him flying without a raccoon suit. When mario is going at P speeds, he always defaults to the 'flying' graphic. Even tiny mario has a 'flying' graphic. Dude was just running around so much that he was almost always in P mode.
Don't get me wrong, I'm sure the guy was using Save states to achieve this goal, but I don't think any cheats outside of possibly using game glitches (particularly ones that might have appeared in the Japanese SMB3 as opposed to the US ver.)
I was also wondering about his bowser head bopping, though.
That mega man 2 video also looks a bit fishy..
- I noticed 2 glitches in the game that he used to pass hard spots
- I noticed him do a really wierd thing the in the first world of Dr. Willy that looks like a glitch but could be missing video frames
- I wasn't aware your life goes to 100% after you kill a boss (pay attention to his health after he kills the last boss before Willy vs right afterwards)
- It also looks like some kind of turbo shooting device is used here for super faster shooting
- The 2nd last level used so many "glitches" and "time losses" that I lost track!
