Default DOOM III IS COMMING !!! VIDEO CARD RECOMMENDATIONS

Right now, im running these cards in my pc's...

    Geforce2 dual display
    Radeon 7000 series

I used to have an asus geforce3 deluxe, but thats gone.

im running an athlonXP 2200+ on my main gaming rig.

What would be a good card for about $300 or less that would be
a safe bet when i get Doom III installed so i can run it nice and spiffy?

The safest bet would be to wait until DOOM 3 comes out ;)

I can't suggest anything because I have no idea if the cards people ran the leaked alpha with months and months ago will be up to running the real thing, or not.

Exactly. I bought a new Geforce5 this summer waiting for Half Life 2 and now it won't be released for another few months. And the Geforce is already aged, some of the new ATI cards should handle Doom3 well but knowing Carmack he's always developing games that push tomorrow's hardware.

Do what I do. Play the demo when its released then see if all the hype is warranted. Test your computer with the demo and see if it works right. If so and if you like the game then buy it and see if everything runs smooth. If not then go for the latest greatest card. Why blow 300 bucks if you don't have to?

You can always wait till it comes out on the PS2 or XBOX and buy that copy!

Cheaper in the long run as well..

the best card out now (and for the next 6 months at least) is the Radeon 9800 series of cards (NOT the 9800SE) You can get a 9800 non-pro for $200 right now but if you wait until after xmas you will be able to get a pro for around that. The 9800 XT 256meg is the top card atm, but it is only slightly faster then the Pro.

The difference in the 9800np and pro is clock speed and memory speed only. It is quite easy to overclock a current np card faster then the 9800pro.

if price is no object is the 9800 XT 256meg which is over $400.

I have a 9800 non-pro that is clocked at 414/620 and I can play that old leaked DOOM III alpha at 1024x768 with 2xaa and 4xaf over 40 fps.. And that is the old Alpha from 2002.. I'm sure the DOOM III engine is far more optimized by now.

Stay away from all nvidia cards right now, they don't support all the functions of DirectX 9, not even their top dog card.

oh.. normally I would say wait on buying a new card until a game comes out but the market for cards is set for the next year. Go ahead and get a 9800 as Nvidia has nothing on the map and is actually doing a company shake-up after the Xbox bath and current tech cards not meeting the power of those made by ATI. The next gen ATI card comes out around summertime and will be $400 for sure lol. The 9800 is going to be the top dog for the next year.. A $200 9800 will last you a year or more.. that is about as good as it gets fellas. Waiting will only save you $50 by the time Doom III or HL2 hit the shelves.

oh.. and you get a coupon for a free HL2 with most all Radeon cards right now.

Yeah , then i can just throw away my LAN setup too!
Besides man, i dont think i wanna play THAT game with a console controller at all. Unless it comes out for the sega master system.

Talkin bout, I was thinking about improving the machine this weekend
and buying another card, thats why i asked.
But if i buy a nice spiffy card, i would want doom 3 to run with it.

Waiting is like... Well it just sucks outright.
there has to be a piddleskippy good video card already out that
    id be straight with.

Yeah, I think you're a couple of years behind on your reading

He made to switch to Nvidia from Voodoo cards but now he's always going on about the features of ATI's cards. I haven't bought the newest and flashiest 3d card since I had a twin Voodoo2 SLI setup, it was about $500 I think and it was good for like 12 months
