Mario Kart DD Glitch?

I was playing battle mode two player today. While playing in the Pipe Plaza level my friend hit me with a shell from behind and knocked me into the pipe. So I teleport but still have all of my balloons? Any of you had this happen before? We tested it about ten times and got the same result.

That's VERY odd. I MUST try that out tonight. I'll post a replay when I do it.
