Retro-tastic! But really more of a video game thing, so I'll bump it to the appropriate forum.

You couldn't have come up with your own artwork?

It's one thing to take a 20yr old label design and update, it's another thing to use someone elses work from a like a minute ago and edit over their logo & pretend it's yours.

First. I posted in two forums on Atariage outlining what I wanted to do with the Space Invader Arcade label. There were no post asking me not to use it.

Second. This is a limited run of 20 carts. I'm not doing this to make money.

Third. This is HACKING. Is it any different to take a game that someone else has made and make changes to it?

And Finally. I'm no artist. I could come up with a cut and paste label, but I wanted this cart to look nice. This is only 20 carts, not an ongoing thing. As I posted at Atariage:

It is a Hack of Rob Kudlas Space Invaders Hack. I don't know Rob, but I would gladly give him a cartridge of the hack for the work he put into the original.

I would extend the same offer to the designer of the original label and will credit Rob in the instruction sheet included with the game as I will with Taito for creating the original game.

I have reservations as well over using the label, I don't even think slapping the green vector text over everything looks that good. Using some kind of plainish template like the Beagle Bros. (plain white background, black text) would be 'neater' in my opinion, if aesthetically lacking. Avoids all that nasty plagiarism stigma too, or at least some of it. Hack of a hack of a hack.. :P

That said, I think this vectorizing of 2600 games is a pretty neat idea.. I think I could come up with some nice label designs for the series if it isn't too late, and some compensation in the form of cartridges.

I kind of agree about the label as well. It's kind of a respect thing. I guess either you "get it" or you don't.

Even if you aren't an artist you could have had an art work contest and gave a copy of the game away as a prize. I'm sure that a bunch of people would have submitted entries.

If you can come up with a nice label I would gladly give you a copy with the label. The labels have'nt been printed yet. So if someone can produce a nice label and I use it, the designer will get a copy of the game.

I think you guys need to lighten up a bit. If this were a game being produced for sale at Atariage, maybe you'd have a point. If he were not giving proper credit to the original designers, you'd have a point. He made a cool hack and is making it availble to a few of us in cart form as a favor. At that price he's certainly making zero profit if he's even breaking even. Expecting him to come up with a completely original label here is a little much. If I were the designer I'd be fine with his derivating the work so long as the manual and/or cart had a design credit for me on it. This is all a hobby, it's not a business at this level. Were he trying to make a profit I'd feel differently but this, IMO, is just a guy doing us a favor and I appreciate it.

Thanks chadtower. That is the viewpoint that I am coming from also.

I have been asked by dealers if they can offer my hacks for sale. I have given permission for one site to offer my hacks at this time. The only thing that I ask in return is a copy of the hack for myself. I waived any royalty on the sales so the carts can be offered cheaper. One site agreed and the other site did not. As for Atariage, if they would like to offer any of my hacks, then it would be the same condition as above. Unfortunatly I have never recieved a reply from them on making my hacks into cartridges.

Sorry if I sound a bit harsh. I completely understand with these being a limited number, and it's a hack of a hack, etc. But IMHO, even with permission, it seems kind of disrespectful to the original artist, (we're talking about the designer of the label adorning the hack which is sold at Atariage, not some old artwork from a 20 yr old game) that you would simply take his custom artwork, remove the Atariage logo, and slap "VECTOR" on it and you're done.

Why not take the original artwork and slap VECTOR on it? It would serve the same purpose. Even if your basis was from the Hack which Rob made, not the original. It's just a respect thing.

Someone puts their time & effort into this artwork, then another comes along and uses it with almost no change whatsoever. For some people it is not a big deal, but for anyone who's had their work used, it feels like a cheap shot, like Neo took the easy street to finish up his cart.

And why do you see Atariage's name on there in the first place? Because it was made for sale on their site.

Sorry Neo, not trying to start a fight, and I didn't see your original post at Atariage asking to use this label, but it's kind of a moral call, that some would have a problem with while others would not. I personally think it's wrong, and this was just the first I had saw of it, so I posted here.

I realize you aren't selling these to make money, but from a previous post somewhere I thought I read you were having Jarett Waite make these for you. It could be sold on a regular basis from his site, more than the 20 if you wanted, with all of your hacks for that matter. But would prbably go over better if it had original artwork on it. You notice all the other games that are being offered on his site and at Atariage have different labels. This was the same when some of these games were not being sold by Hozer anymore, AA got permission to sell these games, and had new artwork created for them, not using someone elses. Jarett is doing the same with the games that he offers now from his site.

I think if you don't have the gift to make these labels, it would not be very hard to get someone to make one for you, do the contest route, or get a regular designer, like how some of the homebrewers have started doing. Anything would be better than using other people's works. That's just my take on it that's all. I won't post anymore on this, and not try and make this anymore of a debate than it already is.

E-mail me at tokeo@bellsouth.net with your name and address and I'll verify it for you. I don't see retrokeeper on the list.

Here is an alternate label I whipped up. For now I am still using the original version.

My 2 cents, if they original maker of the label isn't complaining, use it. But move the green VECTOR Text to the bottom on the silver part, under the space baddies feet
Rend, slaughter, devour your enemies. There is no other way to survive. You cannot escape your hunger, Warriors of Purgatory
