I just bought RPG maker 2 for ps2, go home, and I get DRE's, now I cannot take the game back to gamestop because I have opened it. I feel like I wasted my 50$(gift card )
Is their any way to repair disk read error's (without opening the Ps2)?

I kno that sucks big time, try placing the disk in different positions when putting in disk tray, and also, is the disk blue? Cause when i got Risk:Global Domination, it took me 100 tries to get it right. I would try calling Sony but thats crap because they dont do anything.......
not without opening it.

I know that the rules have changed...but won't they take exchanges for the same title if the game is defective??? I've never had problems doing that.

Blue backed is a CD based game. Clear backed is a DVD based game. Your PS2 has begun to fail to read CD based discs. The lens is probably dirty. Less likely, but possible, the laser eye is getting weaker, and/or the laser assembly is a tiny bit out of height adjustment. That's all it takes.
I repair at least 8 PS2's a week, and often more than that. I predict the rarest console ten years from now, will be the uber rare 'working' PS2.

You can get a can of compressed air from Wal-Mart .
Opend the tray and put the nozzle in and blast away.
I've cleaned a few PS2's that way and it worked.
Well the thing is blue disks usually don't work, especially on some models. I think thenewer ones might mess it up, but yes, RPG Maker is great, but like I said before, try it in different posistions, and also, does it make weird noises like it is unzipping som ething?
I know someone posted about some tape trick. Take some tape and put it on both sides of the disc. Maybe they will post about it. Never tried myself.
Cool people I have bought stuff from on this board: orrimarrko kyosuke75 dave2236 video_game_addict cloudstrife29661 NESCollector75
If it's slipping with blue backed discs (grinding noise), a tape trick could work. If it's not slipping, it's the laser. Dirty. Weak. Too High. Too low. Burnt out...
So many different failures can cause the problem, the mind reels...

there is a trick to the DRE insert your disc and slowly turn your PS2 upside down (works sometimes, depends on the magnitude of the DRE).
Broken? fix it.
It's amazing how Sony still claims there is no problem with the PS2.
I've had:
1 X-Box
1 Gamecube
3 PS2's
I like my PS2 but Sony workmanship and durability is garbage. And sadly it is done on purpose.
This is a pain, but I can't stand to not have my PS2 (Send it to Sony) because I play it so much.
I used the guide on TechTV which explains how to raise/lower the lens. I then discovered, through hours of trial-and-error, that my PS2 CANNOT read CDs and DVDs at the same time. Now, I leave my PS2 unscrewed so I can change the gear position when I need to change discs types.
Egbert, I miss you...
in that case your laser is probably very very bad get a new one from lik-sang

Broken? fix it.

If you want to get a new PS2. Electronic Botique will give you $100 trade in for a non-working PS2.
