Had my first lunchtime thrift run of ’04 today, and what a way to start! Walked into my friendly neighborhood Goodwill and went over to where the video games have been showing up lately (they move every so often). Ignoring the Genesis sports titles that have been there for weeks, I checked out a few NES carts I hadn’t seen before…but all were ultra-commons.
And then my eye caught a lonely little stack of 2600 carts at the end of a lower shelf. I bent down and ticked through Missile Command, Frogger, Space Invaders, a few other commons, and a third-party cart at the bottom of the stack with it’s label hidden. I stuck my finger in the cart opening and pulled it out of the stack. The flash of silver told me it was something better than the rest, but when I saw that red & white checkerboard I knew I’d struck dog food:
Three dents on the front label, but no rips. And aside from an asterisk in blue ink pen on the front label, it was in really good shape. I was stunned. This was almost identical to the way I found my Tooth Protectors cart a few years ago…the major difference being a higher price today (99 cents vs. 79 cents – inflation sucks ). Feels like I’ve already made my best find of the year - but who knows, could be the start of good things to come.
