Alright, why the heck are we all still calling the PS2, GCN, and XBOX the "nextgen" gaming machines? These are here now. They're not "next" any more! Heck, truly nextgen system wil be here when, next year? Seriously, what's the deal here?

Who called them next gen? I call them current myself. I only use the "gen" phrase when talking about, next gen consoles

Personally, Next Gen is the SNES, Genesis and those machines. You know, the "next generation" after the original classics. The stuff you mention is "Modern" to me.
Antiquities - Pong machines, Telstar Combat, dedicated-to-one-or-a-few-built-in-game consoles.
Classics - The beginning of cart-based machines: Atari 26/52/78; Colecovision; Intellivision, etc.
Next Gen (or Neo-Classic) - SNES, Genesis, Neo Geo perhaps...
Modern - Everything out now or "recently ended (ie, Dreamcast, N64)"
This timeline and these definitions have been debated at length.
Still Around...Still Gamin'...
I personally see Next Gen as the 32-bit consoles (or 1994-1997). Saturn, Playstation, Jaguar, 3DO, etc., as that's when I first heard the phrase in use/coined.
It seems that the generations, at least as far as I know, are separated into groups of years: 1984-1988, 1989-1993, 1994-1997, 1998-2004.
84-88: NES and Master System
89-93: Genesis, SNES, Gameboy, Turbografx
94-97: Saturn, Playstation, N64, 3DO, Jaguar
98-04: Dreamcast, Playstation 2, Gamecube, Xbox
05-??: new consoles by Sony, Nintendo and MS.
Should Phantom ever materialize (an unplugged box does not convince me), those last 2 dates may can/should be changed.
Sorry that I don't have any Atari or other pre mid-80s consoles up; my knowledge of that is nil.
I say the same thing.Originally Posted by Sylentwulf
I usually only refer to systems as "next gen" if they haven't been released yet. Once they're released, they're just "current gen", although I don't think I ever actually refer to them like that. Here's how I see it:
1st Gen: Dedicated systems (Pong, Coleco Telstar)
2nd Gen: Early programmable systems (Channel F, 2600, Odyssey^2)
3rd Gen: The post-crash 8-bit systems (NES, Master System, 7800)
4th Gen: 16-bit systems (Genesis, SNES, TG-16)
5th Gen: 32/64-bit systems (PSX, Saturn, N64, Jaguar, CD32, CD-i)
6th Gen: Dreamcast, PS2, Gamecube, X-Box
7th Gen: Next Gen
It might even be worthwhile to split the 2nd Generation into two, with the 5200, ColecoVision (and maybe INTV) in the later half. Of course, portables and computers don't fit into this at all, and have their own evolution.

Well, this thread was started ater I saw a post with someone saying half the people they knew only had on next gen system, and the other half had none, and I swear I've seen this used a lot. Maybe I'm nuts, it's been lnown to happen before.
If people have only been playing video-games for a short period (i.e., THEY ARE NOOBS), then they could be excused for misconstruing "next-gen" as being a term that refers to some sort of intrinsic property of the Xbox et al., rather than simply a designator of the system's relationship to what has gone before.
They could also be excused for eating dog-poop sandwiches, but that is another matter entirely.
Those of you who still refer to old stuff as "next gen" are living in a dream world of long past and I commend you for your adherence to old standards. Although I suppose you at least have a stump to stand on, as the day of "modern" art has come and gone. But you guys are going to have to come to an agreement as to exactly which of the old generations of obsolete video-game entertainments are to be referred to "next gen".
Sniderman -- If SNES is next-gen, then is NES current gen?
Excuse me while I go throw on some Depeche Mode "modern rock".

In the UK, most of the gaming press refer to whatever the current lot is as 'next gen', even some of the mags that have been around for years.
A bit annoying.
Mind, a couple of them still refer to the PlayStation as PSX, even though it got changed to PlayStation in, what, 1994 or something? Wonder what they'll call the PSX when it comes out here? :-)
I see it sort of like this as well. Although don't consider my Nes, SNES, and N64 old or ancient, just agedOriginally Posted by farfel
