de-yellowing nes systems

anyone have a miracle cleaning agent to take the yellow out of this stuff? i havent found one yet, though im experimenting with comet w/bleach, and have had marginal success...

i have one that looks like soemone smoked a cigar all over it every day for years, thought about just putting it in a bucket of bleach for a few weeks...

I would think that putting it in bleach would just make it white and not the original color that you want. Plus it would probably make the plastic a lot more brittle.

Since the yellowing comes from Degradation of the plastic it can't be "cleaned off" . And if you did help it some, age would just turn it yellow again.

I'd suggest using a "dye" , like a greyish blue color and dyeing it. Or paint it.

The thread titles says NES, but it sounds like were talking SNES .

Well I've never had a yellow NES , so I don't know about that. :P

they seem to be basically the same plastic, and i would assume the miracle cleaning agent would clean both equally(or nearly) as well. the main thing that got me thinking is that i bought a couple atari systems and games this morning and the box had an old yellow NES that (when i took it appart revealed that it) had been in a fire, and is ridiculously yellowed. upon posting this question i remembered the SNES i bought that came in the box that was yellow and smelled like cigar smoke, so i thought id include it here also.

is there a difference in the cleaning properties of the plastic between the original NES and the SNES?

The SNES's are made from inconsistent (crap) plastic in many cases. The SNES yellowing is ALL THE WAY THRU the plastic. Trying to get the yellow out of that would be like trying to get the white out of rice. Paint it, swap case parts with a decent looking one, or learn to like it.

NES's do not yellow that way, and if they do yellow, it's sun bleaching, nicotine, thrift store filth, or all of the above. NES's can be restored by a disassembly and cleaning. If it's yellowed bad, an S.O.S. pad used judiciously will do the trick. With the S.O.S. pad you are taking a layer off....
