8-bit RPG's: any recommendations/resources?

I'm currently on an 8-bit RPG fix. I recently finished Phantasy Star 1 and I'm working on Dragon Warrior 1 right now. I searched google for some good information/comparison sites but couldn't find any. So I ask the roundtable: do you guys know of any good sites that cover 8-bit RPG's, specifically the underrated ones? I'm obviously aware of the Final Fantasy's and Dragon Warrior sequels, but I'm sure that there are some great ones I have overlooked over the years.

Oh, and I'm talking about turn-based games only, no need to mention the zelda's, crystalis, etc.

The Dragon Warrior series is always a good choice. Final Fantasy is another one. You could try the Ultima games, but they weren't really my cup of tea. For something a bit different, try Destiny of an Emperor.

Y's Vanished Omens for SMS
Hydlide for NES (Wicked Hard for the first few levels... hope you like one fight... go back to town.. heal up... one fight.... etc.)

I recommend Destiny of an Emperor. It's a neat little Dragon Warriorish RPG set during the time of Romance of the 3 Kingdoms. The game is pretty easy to get into as it's a lot more fast paced than most turn based RPGs. Especially handy is the all out option during battle that has your characters and the enemies duke it out constantly till one side is finished.

Ultima Exodus is very difficult game and might not appeal to everybody, but it's sequel Avatar is one of my favorite Nes RPGs. It may not be entirely faithful to the original game it's based on, but I still found it to be a pretty solid RPG. The SMS version is worth trying too. That version is a more direct port of the game.

AD&D Pool of Radiance is great. If you like 3d dungeon mazers then I'd also recommend Wizardry 1 and 2.

Any Ultima game on the C-64 (Except maybe Ultima 6... I'm surprised they even did that one on the C-64). There are NES versions of Ultima 3, 4, and 5, but they're not as good as the actual C-64 versions.

Also check out the Japanese RPG's that have had the ROM's translated, like Rainbow.....or Railroad.....whatever the hell that game was called. www.zotar.com is a good place to get the translation patches, and the ROM's can be found with some searching.

Doc, if you're still looking for suggestions, let me also put in my recommendation for the entire Final Fantasy Legend series (I, II, III and FFL Adventure) for Gameboy. FFL is my personal favorite RPG series of all time. All the 8-bit goodness you desire with the added benefit of portability!

Great fun indeed. I think the NES version would've been pretty good had it been released, but the Japanese version is essentially unplayable due to the language barrier.

Anybody mentioned the old Ys game on IBM PC yet? :P

I can't believe no one (including me) mentioned it already, but Wasteland on the C-64 and PC is truly excellent. Still one of my favorite RPG's ever.

Wizard's Crown on Atari XE, Phantasy 1 ,2, 3 on C-64 actually many SSI RPGs are of exellent value and playabilty. Also, not forgetting The Bard's Tale series. As already mentioned, Pools of Radiance, and others like Champions of Krynn, Curse of the Azure Bonds (hehe, CGW got a right slagging for their magazine cover at the time (Beasts, Broadswords and Breasts, or something along the lines)).

Of course, Adventure on VCS rates about the best in the biz.

AD&D Pool of Radiance was released for the Nes. Are you thinking about AD&D Dragons of Flame that was only released on the Famicom?
