Boxes

When you guys who collect go after games and systems, how important are the boxes to you?
I am a fiend for box art of all kinds. I'm buying the Famicom Gameboy SP mostly because of the cool box.
My point here is this: is it worth the extra money it may cost to you guys if the box and instructions are included?

Definitely like to have the box and instuctions. i love the nostalgia that a box can bring with it. It is also nice for displaying purposes and i guess last but not least it can protect the systems or games from dust and assorted damage.........

I think there is a thread about this somewhere, but anyway...

I used to collect loose for everything, but it's just too easy. Now, it's complete only for me for NES, 7800, SNES, and SMS. For anything pre-crash, loose is fine. Anything post-cartridge I don't collect (discs are uncollectable in my opinion). For disc-based systems, I only buy games that I enjoy playing and nothing else.

For SNES, boxes and manuals are welcome, but I can live without them. If I find a boxed game that is significantly higher than it would be cart only at a certain store, I'll skip. But if it's only one or two dollars extra, I'll buy it.

However, when I buy PSX, PS2, and Gamecube games, they have to have the boxes and manuals. The only games for these systems I don't have a box or manual for are Need For Speed: High Stakes for PSX (got it from a friend for free, the box was missing) and Max Payne for PS2 (got it for $5 and the manual was missing, but at that price that wasn't an issue to me. BTW, if anybody has an extra manual for Max Payne that they don't mind giving away, send me a PM, but if not, I can live without).

I don't require the box for anything cartridge-based, unless it's something I can go out and buy new at a retail store.

CD-based games, though, are a totally different story. Since most CD-based games make it so easy to keep the case and manual with the game itself, I almost always require the game to include the case and manual. Only in very special situations do I buy a CD-based game without the case or manual.

I like collecting complete items as well. If I see a rare game in the wild that is loose, I will buy it.

My consoles are all boxed (except a crappy playstation), i love to look at it
For Megadrive and MasterSystem i only want boxed games, NES can be loose, SNES depends on the game.
GBA and CD-based games must be complete for me.

To give my two cents on your point:

Absolutely it's worth the extra money if you like them. Plus you'll always get more for boxed games if you decide to sell them later on.


Me personally, I could give two sh*ts about boxes. I used to for some stuff, but they just take up too much space in the end. Cover art is definitely cool, but how often do you really look at it? I do seek out manuals, though.

I'm a huge stickler for boxes. Usually, I wont even consider a game if its missing its box. The only execption that I can think of would be a ToeJam and Earl loose I got for 3 bucks and large lot purchases.

Recenlty, I've been seeking out JUST the boxes for items. For example, I'm one of those crazy persons who bids on empty PS2 and XBOX boxes on ebay .. I know that in the future, the boxes will be harder to find than the systems...

I am a total box and manual hunter. I will not even consider buying a game for the nes/sms/snes without it's box...maybe without the manual. Kinda makes it a bid harder for me to collect.

it Will not be crossed off my collection list until it is so. (which is why it's costing a lot and taking so long)

For my Genesis collection I want the box and manual. If it is a real rare game the just the box is fine. Have the boxes for my NES games is nice but not a must. Any CD media game must be complete. Old stuff like the Atari 2600 boxes and manuals don't matter to me at all. I just look at them as a bonus.

I don't care about the boxes very much. I have a bunch of boxes, but I don't go out of my way to collect them...I just want the games...

I'd like it if all my games had their boxes and manuals... but it's just not going to happen any time soon. Most of my older cartridge based games I insist on having good labels and I've collected up quite a few missing manuals. The only NES games I have with boxes are Tetris (because someone at GameStop threw it away) and CastleQuest (because I bought it on ebay with the map).

All my Genesis and Master System games absolutly have to have their boxes though. Most of them are plastic so why the hell not? :P

CD based games have to have the boxes and manuals... no exceptions. And GBA games are new enough I buy them all with boxes anyway.

I just posted a general guideline for what I look for when buying a game initially. I'll scour every source available though to complete any of my games. Cartridge or CD. The hunt can be a lot of fun. Especially when you don't have a lot of money to just throw around.
