References are not a requirement, no more than holding a $20 up to the light or checking someone's driver's license when taking a check from them. In all those situations though, they are pretty good suggestions that can prevent you from running into problems later on down the road.
At the top of this forum is a Sticky message where people track the people they've traded with. It's no way mandatory, but I know when someone has something for sale here I always do a quick searchi in there and make sure that no one has had any major problems with them before I send them my cash first.
If you've done multiple trades or deals with people from DP, you should start your own response in that thread!
