At the beginning of the game it says' based on a true story'. Its obviously not, but its just something to freak you out.
Somebody make me a "CGE 2k7 Attendee banner" so I don't have to use this lame text

    Well there's this:

    http://www.geocities.com/kazamaceo/researchpaper2.html

But I particuarily loved the disclaimer at the top of the page.

DISCLAIMER: Due to recent research and looking around, I can't credit any of the information in this report anymore. So, in other words, most of the presented "facts" are absolute crap. ^_^
Anyway I figured it was just based on a Japanese urban legend of some kind.

Yeah, it's printed on the package. I remember buying this game (on release day, thats when I had ass loads of money to spend and no bills) the people at Gamestop were like "what in the world is this game...based on a true story?...wow, that's odd".

They gave me freeky looks cause I also bought Gitaroo Man that day, they musta thought I was a bit odd.

When you say something is based, it can mean many, many things. I could tell a story of seeing a ghost in my friend's house, and then there is a game where you go and fight and kill the ghost in a house that looks like my friend's.

The only true information that I know about Fatal Frame is this:
The location is based on a real house out in the woods. The house is supposedly haunted. Well, that's about it. I have seen pictures of the real house and compared them to the house in the game. ign has some stuff about it.

Yeah, "based on a true story" is one phrase you need to be skeptical of. I used to love that show "beyond belief" where they'd tell stories and then they'd tell you if it was fake or "based on actual events" which could mean anything. A story about a ghost that haunts a house could be based on a woman who was sleepwalking and claimed to see a ghost.

That ruined Beyond Belief for me.
