Greatest Games Lists

Hi everyone

I'm doing some research on the best/greatest video games over the years. I've perused the forums here which have helped me uncover a few sources (including DP's own top 99 games), but I would greatly appreciate if people could help me find magazines, newsletters, etc. that have produced such a list for all, some or specific game platforms? Doesn't matter what platform it is.

It doesn't matter how old the magazines are, what games are listed and what everyone's opinions are, I'm just trying to track down as many good sources as I can. Here's a list of the ones I know of at this point in time:

Amstrad Action (Issue 76 / Jan 92)
Edge Magazine (Issue 80 / Jan 2000 and October 2003)
EGM (Nov 97 / Possibly Jan 2004?)
Entertainment Weekly (Issue 709)
FHM (Jan 2004)
Game Informer (Issue 127 / Nov 2003)
Hyper Magazine (Australian publication, Feb 1995)
Next Generation (Issue 50 / Feb 99)
PSE2 (Issue 100)
Retro Gamer (Issue 1)

I'm sure there are others, and given the amount of knowledge amongst everyone here it shouldn't be a too difficult task.

One last question, can someone direct me as to where I could purchase PSE2 Issue 100, as well as the current issue of the UK Nintendo Official Magazine? I live in Australia and I've never seen these publications here!

Wouldn't it be better to look for the opinions of gamers themselves? I mean, magazines can often be biased/opinionated. It would be better to base your results on what gamers generally consense are the best games.

The DP top lists are a good place to start.

There are two ways to get that info from our resources here.

1. The old listings page has links to all of the "top games" lists and discussions. You can find that link here: http://www.digitpress.com/lists.htm

2. You can click the "Rarity Guide" link above, pick the systems you're interested in (or leave it blank for ALL) then check off the "recommended only" check box. That will bring up a list of all the best games for each system.

I'm not a big fan of lists but I've found that the IGN top 100 list is the least painful for me to agree with for the most part.

I agree with you - but, as far as my research goes, forum posts and anything of that ilk is not deemed to be a 'credible' source. Naturally the best source is the gamers themselves, but in terms of actual credibility/legitimacy for what I am doing, I can only use publishable material, such as magazines or newsletters.

Besides, if you uncover enough resources you should be able to gain a pretty reasonable idea of what's good and what's not.
