    Default Best Version of Elite?

The creators of the game say the Original Nintendo is the best. I think the C=64 version best (better controls). What say you?

The creators Ian Bell and David Braben always said that the original game for the BBC-B is the best version, and having played it myself, I have to agree. I also played the Spectrum version, which is second best. The C-64 version sucks big time when compared to the Spectrum version (hard to believe but true, due to the fact the Speccie uses Z-80 processor).
Third best version has to be the Atari ST version. (Shame David couldn't manage the same with Elite II Frontier).

"It has since been converted to many platforms. The best conversions were for the Nintendo Entertainment System and the Acorn Archimedes. The best way to re-experience the feel of 8 bit Elite is to run the NES (Famicon) version using an emulator." - Ian Bell

He has pics of the Amiga Elite. Didn't even know it existed! Looks *very* good. So too does the 256-color Elite-Plus for the PC.

oh yes, i forgot he said the Acorn version is ace too. But i do remember very well one of them saying that the original version (BBC-B) is the best.

As an old prof used to say, Don't rely on memory. Rely on research and references. http://www.frontier.co.uk/

"the best is probably NES Elite as it had extra fluff, like the pictures of each world, and the progression of your commander from rags to riches was quite amusing, and the icon system made it easier to play."- David Braben

    for whatever it's worth,

Games : Elite frequently asked questions (Answers from David Braben)

    15. Which is your favourite version of Elite - which is the best?

I'm often asked this, and I suppose it depends on whether you allow for the time when each version was released. In my mind, the best version of Elite for the time had to be BBC Elite, or just possibly Commodore 64 Elite, as they shone out so strongly over their contemporaries. Otherwise, the best is probably NES Elite as it had extra fluff, like the pictures of each world, and the progression of your commander from rags to riches was quite amusing, and the icon system made it easier to play. I certainly have the fondest memories of BBC Elite.
it's all relative... Tis why I kinda hate top 10 all time lists and such.

There's nothing "relative" about it. This topic is the BEST Elite... regardless of time period it was made. As David braben said, "the best" overall is the Nintendo version.

I really need to get my hands on the Amiga version. It has solid ships instead of vectors. ;-)

he's (David Braben) pointing out that it's relative in his comments, unless I suck at reading comprehension. Whatever dude, I'm gonna go play games, not argue them. peas dog!

Phew, I am glad I was right. For a second I thought my memory lets me down. So I don't need the old Prof just yet. But you are right, research is always better, that is why I have 2500 gaming magazines from 1981 onwards.

Yeah, but this topic is for *all time*, not just limited to pre-85. Both programmers clearly state that the NES is the best version... just like I originally said. He tried to prove me wrong... but I'm not wrong. I was 100% correct.
