    Default PS2 Damage?

I just bought a PS2 so forgive me if this is a "newb" question. I was going to put my PS2 up on it's side (because it just looks so damn cool standing up like that) and a friend mentioned that that could cause damage to both the systems and the games. Is that true?

I have heard that playing with the system in the vert. could damage the DVD drive.. This is not confermed, but many people believe it. I think that most people have their systems in the Vert and when that 10% fail they think that as the cause.

My PS2 carved a neat gouge in one of my games, but I don't know if the machine was vertical at the time. I did keep mine in the vertical position for a while, though, until I read all of the rumored bad side effects (to the games--I don't know of any reason why vertical positioning would be bad for the console itself). Since the gouge only knocked out three levels from my Unreal Tournament disc, there may have been a significant lag time between the damage occurring and my noticing it. Fortunately, I was able to buff out the gouge enough to get back two of the lost levels.

Of course, I may have been stupid enough to leave the disc in the PS2 while carrying it in my backpack, and then I suppose I would have a harder time pinning the fault on the console...

I've heard the rumors, and headed them since when I got my system 2 years ago. Never have I had a problem. People that I know that have theirs vert haven't had a problem. The only thing I can think that might actually happen is if you rent games, the little sticker rental places often put on there creates just enough of a weight imbalanced to mess up your drives over time.

I've had my PS2 vertical since launch day and it hasn't ruined anything - games or movies (mind you I've played a DVD movie in it only once or twice since I already owned a DVD player).

Tekken Tag Tournament sounds like it's raping the machine when it's vertical though. And the only way to 'fix' it is to put the machine horizontal. Or to play the music loud enough that you can't hear the disc spinning

why people sit their machines vertical is beyond me...
it saves what, like 6 square inches of space?
there is a reason why no one makes vertical disk drives... its because its stupid.

wberdan- What if that's all the room they have for it? Mine is upright next to a 27" stereo console TV. If it's downstairs it can only be vert since my other systems, stereo components, VCR, etc. take up space.
The PS2 is DESIGNED to work flat OR standing- it's MADE that way & works FINE.
Using something in a way it's supposed to/can be used is "beyond you"? It's when something is used improperly that the problems start!

you seriously believe that laser read disc drives are intended to stand vertical? personally i always felt they sold the stand as a gimmick, just because no one else thought it up first.
im going to stand my cd player on its side now

We've had our PS2 up in the vert position for over a year and haven't had any problems with it. Both games and DVDs (that already worked ok on it) seem to run just fine.

wberdan- read my post more closely- I'm not talking about "laser read disc drives" in general, I'm talking about the PS2, which is what the ORIGINAL post was about too! Do you think Sony did this intentionally to wreck the games/discs?

Don't expect your CD player to work very well that way...

Actually, I've put CD players on their sides before in order to get them to run better. My first discman and my PSX come to mind. I figured it had something to do with the bit that moved the laser (but I'm not an electronics guy so I have no real clue).

...yes, and i also said i felt it was just a gimmick (with potentially little thought to what long term consequenses could be).

I've also had mine vertical since a month or 2 after launch day with NO problems at all.

That "gouging" is COMPLETELY unrelated, I've seen a couple Gamecube games with the same symptoms, its from opening the console before the disc is done spinning and or trying to remove the disc while its still spinning.

Also, You have to remember, the japanese have a LOT of "space" issues in their houses, this is why the DVD combo and vertical stand concept is so popular.

A little off topic, but I have a Sony Disc man with G-protection (anyone else got one?) And I can pucnh it, kick it, drop it, throw it, play it vertical, horizontal, or diagonal, and it does not skip

But I wouldnt play my ps2 vertical, and another question, why in the hell do thay sell a horizontal stand? What, It doesn't site fine on its own? lol

I think the damage comes when the cd is put in wrong and the draw closes wrong

I think the PS2 I have is 1st gen, never laid it on it's side, just always had it horizontal on the floor but when it reads the cd it reads or spins them kinda loudly (like a pc cd-rom drive).

I keep mine horizontal because it fits better with my other components. My friend though has had his standing vertical since launch day without a stand on the carpet and has never had any problems with movies or games.

My PS2 is lying horizontal right underneath the VCR and above the cassette deck. (It's an entertainment center.)

YOU BARBARIAN!!! Why would you leave a poor defenseless console on the floor?
