Default Found my first flat screen Game Gear

I was beginning to wonder what these things look like or if they were an urban myth, but I finally found one- I guess these are the ones to use with the TV tuner and SMS cart converter.

The thing powers up only briefly and gives me a dying NES toaster flashing screen with start up and then black screen (like every 2 or 3 seconds. ) I suspect it needs to be cleaned or that I need fresh batteries or a power supply for it. Let's hope- after that PCE GT I got that looked great but had a dunce screen, I may have a handheld console curse.

Anyone else notice how rare these are? I believe that for the 30 or 40 GGs I've seen/found in the wild, this is the first flat screen one I've come up with. It's for keeps, BTW.

I have a flat-screen GG too, but it doesn't work (it will work with SMS games for some odd reason).

    Flat Screen = glass lens

I wish I could find one. Good find. If you can't fix it, do a shell swap with a working one. Voila!

    Two things...

    1. If you open angelfire, then paste your link, it works just fine. Angelfire checks the referrer

    2. I have one of these. I didn't realize it was rare. It's a first edition GG to be sure. Interesting.

    Default All this

All this controversy beckons the question:

What is special about flat screen GGs?

What special compatibility/incompatibility do they have?

Is there any hardware difference aside from the flat screen?

And how rare are they? I would say to the last that they are 'rare' and 'desirable' but probably not THAT much more than the bubble-ish screen.

And when we say flat, we mean that the edges of the screen are not smoothed and rounded, rather it is closer to being flush with the black plastic body.

I don't really have pic-ability, but if someone could post a pic with a side or oblique-side view of both a flat and round screen, it would help the uninitiated (like me before I found this one.)

hmm...doubt they are rare at all. I have two because my parents bought me and my sister one Years and years ago when they came out with nice carrying cases and tv tuners....I'd say they are common. I never even knew there were different kinds.

I can't imagine these are any bit rare. Mine's a "flat screen", my other collecting buddy's is a flat screen, and even my girlfriend's from when she was younger is a flat screen. I've seen the bubble-looking ones before, but never gave the variation any real thought. I just figured they changed the design half-way through production for whatever reason.

Flat glass is cleaerer and harder to scratch than the pastic rounded type. That's it.
